Consultant Gynaecologist with special interest in Uro-Gynaecology Job Specification & Terms and Conditions Job Title and Grade Consultant Gynaecologist with special interest in Uro-Gynaecology Competition Reference 2025/144 Location of Post Rotunda Hospital, Parnell St, Dublin Details of Service The Rotunda Hospital is a large tertiary referral unit and it is therefore imperative that the hospital provides multi-disciplinary services that are accessible to patients locally, regionally and nationally. The Rotunda Hospital provides leadership in maternity services (obstetrics, midwifery and neonatology) and gynaecology services to all of north Dublin. The Rotunda Hospital leads North Dublin in terms of benign Gynaecology as a central hub for all the referral across Rotunda, Connolly and Beaumont Hospitals. This post will expand the Gynaecology service and allow access to the services for patients across a wide variety of gynaecological referrals. It will also address our uro-gynaecology waiting lists. The Gynaecology team provides a full Gynaecological Service including participation in an On-Call rota. This includes operating, outpatient and inpatient care responsibilities for emergency and elective gynaecological surgery in addition to participation in the administrative, academic and educational activities. The uro-gynaecology department provides a first-class multidisciplinary comprehensive service for women with pelvic floor disorders. We offer the latest conservative treatments for stress incontinence, overactive bladder, painful bladder and prolapse. These are provided by our womens health physiotherapists and Urogynaecology Nurse specialists. We offer a diagnostic and therapeutic ambulatory urogynaecology service and provide all high vigilance surgical options. Our ambulatory clinics offer outpatient cystoscopy, botox and bulkamid. Several urodynamics clinics run every week as does a weekly perineal clinic. The successful applicant will be involved in the provision of obstetric gynaecological service to patients as agreed with the Master. The objectives of this post will be to work closely with colleagues in urogynaecology and benign gynaecology to improve services in the Gynaecology department. Reporting Relationship The Consultants reporting relationship and accountability for the discharge of his/her contract is: i)to the Master / Chief Executive Officer of the hospital through his/her Clinical Director. Purpose of the Post The high level purpose of the post is to provide consultant expertise for both obstetric and general gynaecological services with a special interest in uro-gynaecology. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Standard Duties and responsibilities To participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultants area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer. This will focus on outpatient, inpatient, elective and emergency obstetrics and gynaecology services. Provision of additional subspecialty services may also be required depending on the interests of the successful candidate and the needs of the hospital. To ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that minimises delays for patients and possible disruption of services. To work within the framework of the hospital service plan and/or levels of service (volume, types etc.) as determined by the Employer. Service planning for individual clinical services will be progressed through the Clinical Directorate structure or other arrangements as apply. To co-operate with the expeditious implementation of the Disciplinary Procedure (attached at Appendix II). To formally review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with the Clinical Director / Employer periodically. The Clinical Directorate Service Plan shall be reviewed periodically at the request of the Consultant or Clinical Director / Employer. The Consultant may initially seek internal review of the determinations of the Clinical Director regarding the Service Plan. To participate in the development and operation of the Clinical Directorate structure and in such management or representative structures as are in place or being developed. The Consultant shall receive training and support to enable him/her to participate fully in such structures. To provide, as appropriate, consultation in the Consultants area of designated expertise in respect of patients of other Consultants at their request. To ensure in consultation with the Clinical Director that appropriate medical cover is available at all times having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive as it relates to doctors in training. To supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultants care. To participate as a right and obligation in selection processes for non-Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff as appropriate. The Employer will provide training as required. The Employer shall ensure that a Consultant representative of the relevant specialty / sub-specialty is involved in the selection process. To participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies and procedures. To participate in and facilitate production of all data/information required to validate delivery of duties and functions and inform planning and management of service delivery. Eligibility Criteria Qualifications and/ or experience Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology. Clear evidence of completion of a specific training programme in General Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as evidenced by a certification or qualification by a national or internationally recognized body, such as MRCOG, MRCPI or equivalent Additional training in uro-gynaecology. Entry to competition / recruitment process No candidate will be appointed as a Medical Consultant unless (s)he is registered as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland. Successful candidates must be registered as a Specialist in the relevant Specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland within 180 days of the day of interview. Should the successful candidate not be registered as a Specialist at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate. Should no suitable candidate exist, a further recruitment process may be initiated. Health A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service. Therefore this post is considered a Section 62 post under the Health Act 1953 as amended by the Health Act 2004. Other requirements specific to the post To be available to attend obstetric or gynaecologic emergencies within 30 minutes when on duty. Skills, competencies and/or knowledge Demonstrate up to date knowledge of routine aspects of Obstetric and Gynaecology practice Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organising skills including awareness of resource management and importance of value for money Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathise with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues with dignity and respect. Demonstrate evidence of ability to run a uro-gynaecology service. Demonstrate evidence of ability to run a complex perineal clinic including the ability to perform and interpret endoanal ultrasound and rectal manometry Demonstrate evidence of ability to manage a busy labour ward effectively. Demonstrate an ability to engage in research and clinical trials. Demonstrate an ability to participate fully in audit and clinical governance programmes.
