Overview Clinical Nurse Specialist – Breast Care at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9. Permanent, full-time position within the Beaumont Breast Centre (Department: Surgical).
Location: Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9. Reports to: CNM 3 and Directorate Nurse Manager. Salary: Appointment will be made on Clinical Nurse Manager 2 Grade (€61,463 - €77,666) at a point in line with Government pay policy. Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Closing Date: Friday 10 October 2025 at 12 noon. Note: The hospital reserves the right to close the competition early should a substantial number of applications be received.
Position Summary The Breast Care Nurse Specialist provides a holistic nursing service for patients with benign and malignant breast conditions and those with family risk of breast cancer. Beaumont Hospital is a designated cancer centre and a centre for breast cancer surgery. The post holder will be part of the Breast Care Nursing team (currently three CNS in breast care) and will coordinate the breast care service as part of the multidisciplinary team. The role involves liaising with the surgical cancer service manager, nursing staff, surgical teams, wards, medical/ radiation oncology, radiology, GPs, public health nurses and palliative care units. The CNS will participate in audits and ensure alignment with national quality guidelines (e.g., HIQA and NCCP)."
Responsibilities Clinical Focus
Direct and indirect care; ensure a seamless service for patients diagnosed with breast cancer.
Educate, counsel and support newly diagnosed patients and their families; discuss implications of diagnosis.
Educate and support individuals assessed for family risk of breast cancer; provide up-to-date information on breast disease.
Provide a telephone service post-discharge; act as a resource for patients, families and community services.
Refer patients to other healthcare professionals as appropriate; liaise with support groups; attend breast clinics as necessary.
Provide information on altered body image due to illness/treatment; offer prosthesis and bra fitting as required.
Prepare patients for treatment and procedures; enable participation in treatment plans; develop a care pathway with the MDT.
Maintain accurate, confidential records; ensure clear follow-up instructions and named contacts post-discharge.
Patient/Client Advocate
Prioritize patient comfort and needs; provide high-quality service respecting each patient.
Act as a patient advocate in MDT discussions and coordinate plans with clinical staff.
Assess referred patients, consider patient opinions, and guide decision-making; recognize available resources and distribute patient information leaflets.
Education and Training
Provide education sessions for patients, families, medical and nursing staff, students, and allied health professionals.
Deliver lectures to postgraduate nursing students and student nurses; promote independence through teaching.
Identify needs in relation to breast care; participate in clinical-based teaching; support student nurses and staff.
Professional Development
Agree learning objectives with management to meet development goals; maintain professionalism; participate in conferences and CPD relevant to breast care.
Develop and maintain nursing practice skills; discuss performance with line manager; maintain a professional development portfolio; sustain membership in relevant associations.
Audit and Research
Participate in clinical care audits; evaluate research findings and apply to practice; highlight gaps for quality improvement; participate in collaborative research with the breast team.
Provide statistical information to Directorate Nurse Manager and produce an annual breast care nursing report; assist with data validation.
Consultant Role
Lead and participate in designing and evaluating the breast care service; promote holistic care and health promotion; act as an innovator within the specialty.
Work with medical colleagues and the MDT; respect culture and diversity; be an expert role model for healthcare professionals.
Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Mandatory
Statutory registration and professional qualifications; eligible applicants must be registered with NMBI or eligible for registration; 1+ years post-registration experience in the relevant division and specialist care area (Urology/Oncology as specified); demonstrated CPD relevant to the specialist area; ability to practice safely within scope of practice; annual registration required.
Desirable
Previous CNS experience; experience with computer systems such as Dendrite, Digital Breast, etc.
