It also offers a range of educational diplomas and courses for learners in the wider healthcare sector.

RCPI’s Heritage Centre manages an internationally important collection of archives, printed material and objects relating to the history of medicine and medical education in Ireland. The Heritage Centre is currently engaged in an ambitious plan to open a publicly accessibly medical museum in RCPI’s historic home on Kildare Street. This post will play an important role in preparing the collections for this new museum, ensuring there is an accurate cataloguing of our holdings, identifying material for display and preparing the collections for decant.

Post Summary

Duties will involve but are not limited to:

- Planning and delivery of the project to appraise and catalogue our object collections using CALM (collections management system) and Preservica (digital repository)
- Ensuring legislative compliance in the storage of our collections.
- Ensuring that the object collections are stored and managed in line with the Heritage Centre’s polices and the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI) standards.
- Supporting the Keeper of Collections in maintaining MSPI accreditation.
- Assist the Keeper of Collections with the interpretive planning for the new museum.
- Working with the Archivist on the transfer of the collections management software from CALM to Collections.
- Preparing the collections for decant ahead of the building works for the museum.
- Support the delivery of the Heritage Centre’s public engagement and outreach activities.

Requirements

Person Specification:

- The successful applicant will hold a post-graduate qualification in museum practice, collection care, archives or similar
- Have 2-3 years’ experience in a comparable role
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in an organised and productive way, with strong attention to detail.
- Self-starter, highly motivated with the ability to work flexibly on own initiative to achieve goals within agreed timeframes.
- Excellent IT skills, including practical experience of using collection management systems and digital repository systems. Familiarity with CALM and/or Preservica is desirable.
