The Opportunity

EirGrid has developed an ambitious Business Strategy aligned with Government policies, including its Climate Action Plan. Our purpose is to transform the power system for future generations and our primary goal is to collaborate with the island’s electricity sector on sustainability and decarbonisation.

The role of the Chief Transformation, Technology & Offshore Office (CTTO) is to vision, lead, transform, digitise, deliver and support the transformational programme to deliver the power system and market to 2030 and beyond, maximising the integration of renewables in a sustainable way at an affordable cost, taking on board the voices of all aspects of our society. The ultimate target is a decarbonised power system ahead of 2050.

We now have a new and exciting opportunity for a Data & AI Lab Lead to join our Data & AI Function. This role bridges innovation and execution—turning promising ideas and emerging technologies into practical solutions that solve real‑world business challenges. As Data & AI Lab Lead, you will build and lead our new Data and AI Lab, and in partnership with our business leadership team, rapidly identify, develop, and deliver data, AI and analytics driven proof‑of‑concepts (PoCs) that generate tangible business value.

You will build and lead a multidisciplinary team focused on experimentation, rapid prototyping, and scalable validation, working closely with business units to ensure alignment, adoption, and measurable impact.

In your role, you will collaborate closely with business leaders to uncover use cases, co‑design and develop solutions, and ensure successful handover to operational teams. You will establish feedback loops to capture learning and refine future efforts, and evaluate and adapt external innovations for internal experimentation and potential adoption. This is a role for a true innovator who sees possibilities in data and AI and who can inspire their team to solve complex energy challenges using technology and insight. The Team

The Data and AI Function is accountable for harnessing data and responsible AI to drive insights, enable business efficiency, and solve current and future energy challenges for Ireland. The team manages the roadmap for data‑driven innovation and transformation across the business, ensuring seamless integration of AI, advanced analytics, and descriptive analytics into core business functions.

About you

- Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML, Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years in data science, AI, or analytics, including 5+ years in a leadership role with a strong delivery track record.
- Proven experience identifying, developing, and delivering PoCs with measurable business impact.
- Deep understanding of analytics, applied machine learning, data engineering, and GenAI (e.g., LLMs, NLP).
- Strong understanding of complex business processes and the ability to translate them into data‑driven opportunities.
- Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms, MLOps pipelines, and rapid prototyping environments.
- Commercial mindset with a strong focus on identifying and delivering business value and outcomes.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Comfort with ambiguity and an iterative, fail‑fast approach to innovation.
- Experience working across different business domains or industries.
- Track record of transitioning successful PoCs to production systems.
