They have hands on electrical design and field experience and can design and operate electrical systems, have an understanding of the critical equipment needs for a data center, and understand the constructability of varying designs. As we grow, we are structuring our team to own more of our engineering in house. At Amazon, teamwork is absolutely necessary for us to accomplish our goals. You must be able to work within a team and depend on others to accomplish the required work. As an electrical engineer at Amazon, you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors.
As an Engineer in this role, you will work with the Principals and Senior Electrical Engineers to drive the standardization of designs across the global region in production data centers and resolve open technical issues in the electrical space. You will participate in the research and development of new technologies and designs applicable to our products or services. Relied on as a subject matter expert in the electrical engineering field, you write technical documentation for such projects. You also get to TRAVEL International support will be part of the job, and some international travel will be necessary and should be no more than 30%.
Your tasks include conceiving, initiating and leading projects with widespread impact on infrastructure design, innovation and implementation. You will achieve this by breaking down complex problems into straightforward and actionable solutions. This will be achieved by working with internal teams to understand user requirements and challenges as well as collaborating with teams or individuals from other disciplines, cultures and countries. You will escalate issues as required and communicate clearly and effectively at the appropriate level of detail with people from a wide range of technical abilities and backgrounds.
Part of the role will also include the review and approval of critical equipment submittals including vendor Witness Tests, provide technical support on global Large Scale Events (LSE's), including participation on deep dives, investigations and recommendations on mitigation plans. You will also be expected to maintain and host technical electrical forums to provide a collaborative environment for development of datacenter electrical systems, as well as provide support and mentorship for the whole of the DCC engineering community, all while having fun and offering creative, out of the box solutions.
Key job responsibilities
1. Produce clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, drawings, white papers, wiring schematics and diagrams, and reports.
2. Understand and safeguard implementation of the Global Electrical Basis of Design (BoD) by driving standardization in the data center electrical designs.
3. Development of strategic solutions, which meet or exceed our quality requirements and fall within our budgetary requirements. Capture requirements and turn aspirational company or customer goals into well-defined, achievable and testable specifications and solutions.
4. Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to, and during innovation and research and development projects.
5. Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify the appropriate electrical equipment.
6. Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor's degree in an electrical engineering and cumulative 5+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
2. Excellent understanding of applicable regional electrical code (NEC, CEC, ETCI, NFC, etc…).
3. In depth understanding of critical data center electrical equipment as well as good working knowledge of BIM and Revit.
4. Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
5. Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment/construction.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. 3+ years of experience directly related to data center or mission critical facility design and Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, or regional equivalent.
2. Detailed understanding of uninterruptable power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches. Familiarity with medium voltage distribution systems design.
3. Direct experience with the construction, operation, or maintenance of data centers as well as basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design. Experience with fast track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade project for large-scale technical operations or large-scale compute farms.
4. Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
5. Possess leadership, problem solving skills, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards. An ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality, reliability, or maintainability.
