Dublin, Ireland EirGrid plc Full time

Interconnector Commercial Specialist (E2025094)

We are the people behind Ireland’s electricity grid. We operate the power system with world leading levels of variable asynchronous renewable generation, ensuring that everyone has power when they need it. But that’s not all, we are now transforming the power system for future generations.

And that’s just the beginning of our story. We have a critical purpose. That purpose is to transform the power system to enable our society to reduce our carbon emissions and meet our climate change and net zero ambitions.

Be part of the transformation

The Opportunity

We now seeking an Interconnector Commercial Specialist to join our Interconnection team.

As Interconnector Commercial Specialist, you will advance the financial and commercial workstreams for the optimal use of the HVDC assets linking the all-island Single Electricity Market with neighbouring markets across Great Britain and Europe. This will include management of large programmes of work, participating at internal and external project boards and coordinating a number of resources and activities across multiple jurisdictions. In this role you will lead the development of associated operational policies and procedures, risk mitigations and reporting as well as play a key role in driving the technical inputs to arrangements for the expanding portfolio of regulated and commercial interconnectors connected to the Irish power system.

We will look to you to work with the key strategic stakeholders across the organisation to ensure all relevant financial, commercial, legal and regulatory aspects for system and market operations are in place for the connection and operation of HVDC interconnectors.

You will be responsible for managing the identification and continuous improvement of financial and commercial operational requirements, processes, procedures and systems for a growing portfolio of interconnectors.

The ability to develop strong business cases to demonstrate the compelling arguments, both operational and techno-economic, to support and deliver such opportunities in line with the relevant governance and control frameworks will be key to success in the role.

The Team

The Operations & Asset Management Directorate within EirGrid comprises highly skilled professionals with backgrounds in engineering and business/commerce. Ireland has a target to achieve 80% of our electricity to come from renewable resources by 2030 and to be net carbon neutral by 2050. The Operations & Asset Management Directorate is central to the delivery of our primary role – the operation, development and enhancement of the all-island power system and the wholesale electricity market. Creating a culture of continuous improvement whilst maintaining operational resilience, that drives technical, and process innovation is central to delivering on this role.

The Interconnection function is responsible for the operational activities associated with managing the 500 MW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) East West interconnector (EWIC) to Wales on a 24 x 7 basis and the readiness activities associated with the proposed 700 MW Celtic Interconnector MW HVDC link between Ireland and France. This includes leading the delivery of transformational change in cross border markets, operational development and asset management, as well as identifying and supporting future Interconnector opportunities for the benefit of consumers.

This is an excellent opportunity for innovative, solution-focused, resilient, and motivated individuals to join our team and play a key role in the transition to a low carbon energy future.

About you
Successful candidates will have the following:

- Masters level qualification in Financial and/or Commercial Management, typically with 10+ years relevant experience.
- Ability to lead a team of subject matter experts to deliver transformative change across an organisation.
- Excellent understanding of the financial aspects for safe, secure and reliable operation of regulated infrastructure.
- Strong organisational and operational planning skills with the ability to plan, deliver and lead projects while managing operational risk.
- Ability to provide leadership and work within a business-critical environment while meeting strict deadlines.
- Ability to successfully guide, persuade and influence others towards a common vision or goal, through developed skills of communication and diplomacy, including negotiation and conflict resolution when required.
- An exceptional communicator, able to articulate technical concepts and analysis to non-technical audiences and senior business leaders and can influence and inspire others to deliver interconnection objectives.
- Change oriented, resilient, innovative and comfortable with ambiguity.
- Track record of conceiving and introducing innovative ideas, solutions or new ways of doing things to solve business problems, collaborating with experts along the way.
- Proven strong experience of the design and integration of financial and technical processes into operational businesses.
