Amazon Web Services Open Data Analytics (ODA) organization is looking for exceptional engineers to help in our mission to provide the world's best cloud Big Data processing platform and services such as EMR and Athena.

Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR) is the industry-leading cloud big data platform for petabyte-scale data processing, interactive analytics, and machine learning using open-source frameworks such as Apache Spark, Trino, Hadoop, Hive, and HBase. Amazon Athena is a serverless query service that simplifies analyzing data directly in Amazon S3 using standard SQL.

The ODA Fundamentals team is responsible for integrating and packaging the latest features from the ODA organization and delivering robust, thoroughly tested analytics products to our customers. The team plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of ODA services and executing the product release process to meet business and customer needs.

As a SysDE III (Senior System Development Engineer), you will lead the EMR/Athena release processes to improve efficiency, security, stability, and coverage. You will guide the entire lifecycle of releases, from creation to deployment, either by utilizing existing internal tools or by innovating and creating new ones. You will oversee the infrastructure of our internal testing and simulation environments, consisting of both synthetic and user-generated test benches. You will work closely with multiple DevOps teams to drive the SDLC from concept to launch and ensuring the highest level of quality for your deliverables.

Key job responsibilities

1. Analyze and improve availability, efficiency, capacity, scalability, security and performance of our services.
2. Build, maintain and continuously improve infrastructure for a multi-site development team, including source code repository, build, integration, release tools and scripts, continuous integration infrastructure, packaging, and deployment tools.
3. Develop processes and tools to maintain code base integrity, including check-in validation rules and branch/merge processes.
4. Investigate and recommend best practices for maintaining code quality, including the development of code metrics, code review workflows, test coverage measurement, and the use of static and dynamic analysis tools.
5. Influence and drive operational excellence best practices within the organization.
6. Mentor and support the career growth of fellow engineers within the team.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby experience
- 2+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience with Linux/Unix
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience leading the design, automation, deployment, and support of large-scale infrastructure
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
- Experience in mentoring, leading, or managing more junior engineers
- Experience with Apache Hadoop ecosystem applications: Hadoop, Hive, Presto, Spark, and more
