The GBS Capability Optimisation and Automation (GCOA) organisation is a strategic function focused on transforming finance operations through intelligent automation and AI. GCOA acts as a centralised capability hub, enabling scalable, secure, and compliant solutions that deliver measurable business value.

Role Summary

As Associate Director – Automation Lead, you will guide a team of automation developers, leveraging Agentic AI, RPA, Power Platform, Python and other advanced technologies to address complex business challenges. You are responsible for the development team in the delivery of automation projects, ensuring solutions are implemented efficiently, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards. Your leadership will foster a culture of continuous improvement, compliance, and technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

- Oversee a team of developers on automation projects, from development, testing, deployment to successful transition to operations.

- Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing team of RPA and automation specialists, facilitating skills development and knowledge sharing.

- Collaborate with business partners, quality leaders, and infrastructure teams to understand needs, provide regular updates, and ensure alignment with evolving business needs and compliance standards.

- Provide hands‑on technical direction, troubleshooting, and support to team members, championing best practices in automation and agile delivery.

- Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate risks throughout the project lifecycle. Monitor solution quality, implement robust testing and validation processes, and ensure compliance with regulatory and security standards.

- Allocate resources effectively, balancing team skills and project demands. Track performance metrics, delivery milestones, and KPIs to ensure projects remain on track and deliver measurable business value.

- Drive process improvements, champion new automation technologies, and facilitate the adoption of innovative solutions that deliver tangible impact to users and the organization.

- Maintain clear documentation of project plans, roadmaps, user stories, and technical designs. Ensure governance protocols are followed, including change control and compliance reviews.

- Foster a culture of agility, learning, and iterative delivery. Facilitate retrospectives, encourage feedback, and help teams reflect and improve their ways of working.

- Work closely with the Design and Operations to capture learnings and help upskill teams in technology‑related aspects, increasing overall effectiveness.

- Build and maintain strong partnerships with Quality leadership to ensure solutions remain compliant with evolving regulatory requirements while driving efficiency in delivery.

- Partner with Tech@Lilly on platform and infrastructure opportunities for improvement.

- Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in automation.

Experience & Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.

- Demonstrated leadership in managing teams and partnering with business stakeholders to achieve shared goals and deliver measurable business impact.

- Proven ability to guide automation teams through the full lifecycle of automation projects, including requirements definition, solution design, development, testing, deployment, and transition to operations.

- Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to translate complex business challenges into effective technology solutions.

- Minimum five years of hands‑on experience designing, building, and deploying automation tools with a strong track record of successful project delivery.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build strong relationships with end users, peers, management, and third‑party partners.

- Skilled facilitator, comfortable leading cross‑functional teams and driving collaboration across internal and external stakeholders.

- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment with competing priorities, demonstrating proactive, persistent, and dependable work habits.

- Creative and flexible approach to overcoming obstacles and driving continuous improvement.

- Commitment to maintaining clear documentation, governance protocols, and compliance with regulatory and security standards.

- Experience tracking performance metrics, delivery milestones, and KPIs to ensure projects remain on track and deliver business value.

- Natural curiosity and passion for technology, continuously seeking opportunities to leverage new automation tools and methodologies for organisational benefit.

Preferred Qualifications

- Exposure to performance measurement tools and continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma).

- Experience working with third‑party service providers and managing vendor relationships.

- Familiarity with systems development life cycle and structured programming methods, including requirements gathering, solution design, development, testing, documentation, training, deployment, operations, support, and maintenance.

- Familiarity with AI and automation technologies, such as RPA, LLM‑based agents, orchestration platforms, and cloud‑native services.
