Clinical Nurse Manager UMPC Sports Surgery Clinic Location: Sports Surgery Clinic Job type: Fixed Term Overview of role: UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic are currently recruiting for the role of Clinical Nurse Manager 1 Inpatient Ward on a fixed term contract. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: The Clinical Nurse Manager 1 is required to: Encompass a management/clinical and educational focus to the CNM1 role, comprising of assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care given to patients and their families in the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic. Develop the scope of Specialist Nursing Practice, be accountable, competent, supervise and continue professional development. Management Responsibility: Develop strategies and service goals for the Inpatient Ward with the Clinical Nurse Manager 2. Provide good professional leadership and vision, facilitate team building and planned care. Maintain a quality standard of service. Lead a proactive quality improvement and support accreditation. Develop a shared sense of commitment and participation amongst staff in change management in responding to the health needs of the patients. Ensure all staff members are proficient in the management of patient care. Audit current nursing practice and evaluate improvements in the quality of patient care including patient's impression of the service. Support staff development and education. Identify Quality Improvement Iniatives. Take responsibility for the Clinical Nurse Manager 2, position when uncovered by the post holder and exercise a degree of flexibility and adaptability. Assist the Clinical Nurse Manager 2, in ensuring the duty rosters provide an adequate/even distribution of staff [skill mix/skill grade] and is in line with patient numbers. Responsible for assignment of patient load taking into account the skill mix of staff. Responsible for direct and indirect patient care activities of Staff Nurses, and HCA s. Take patient allocation load when required and work in or between teams. Communication: Advocate and maintain open communication with Senior Nurse Management and the Multi-disciplinary team on clinical and professional issues and ensure that prescribed care is delivered in accordance with agreed protocols. Develop good working relationships to promote seamless care. Liaise with members of the Multi-disciplinary team as part of the contribution to promote improved patient management and liaise openly with other non-clinical support staff and monitor the service provided. Act as a patient advocate through communication, negotiation and representation of the patient's values and decisions in collaboration with other professionals and community resource providers. Promote a courteous and helpful attitude to colleagues, staff, relatives and visitors. Demonstrate willingness to assist co-workers whenever needed and slot into nursing numbers as required. Clinical Responsibility: Provide planned individualised holistic care for patients and ensure efficient planning/liaison with interdisciplinary teams. Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document the care of patients within the unit. Demonstrate advanced specialist knowledge and provide clinical leadership in patient care. Work with the Clinical Nurse Manager 2 in developing lead initiatives and developments that will enhance health gain for patients on the Ward. Participate in the development, formulation and evaluation of guidelines, policies and procedures thus ensuring adherence to delivering a quality service. Exercise high levels of judgement, discretion and decision making. Protect patient confidentiality at all times. Provide supervision/direction for team members who provide elements of care. Comply with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. The Clinical Nurse Manager 1 must maintain a sage environment within the guidelines of safety and best practices laid down by Hospital Policies. The CNM1 must take appropriate action, deal adequately with and report any untoward incident in the Department to the Clinical Nurse Manager 2, and the Director of Nursing and follow where possible. Maintain an accurate reporting system of near misses, occurrences, incidents, complaints, and co-ordinate risk management activities with other quality initiatives. Keep up to date with current research, ensure evidence based practice and research is utilised and must contribute to nursing research that is relevant to his/her area of practice. Work with Bed Management and ADON in achieving required patient flow processes. Manage Patient bed boards and make changes where necessary. Education and Staff Development Responsibility: Educate all nursing and allied staff, including orientation of new staff to the speciality to develop excellent work practices. To provide mentorship and educational programme for those within the speciality. Develop leadership ability in order to act as an effective role model. Support and participate in education and in-service programmes for all staff. Promote self care and wellness through patient education, health promotion and training, communication with relatives and significant others in order that the patient will have an understanding of their condition thereby increasing their compliance with treatment and advice. Self Development Responsibility: Demonstrate a high level of interest in advances in the clinical management of patient care by attending and participating in in-service programmes, lectures, seminars and staff conferences. Study days that have a general focus as well as days that have an advanced practice focus. Engage in personal development planning and continuous professional education. Participate in clinic committees as required, attend and contribute to interdepartmental and other meetings. Such other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned from time to time by the Clinical Nurse Manager 2, Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Nursing. Clinical Nurse Managers are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the Clinic. Qualifications & Experience: Be registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by An Bord Altranais. Have at least five years post-registration nursing experience (full-time or equivalent hours part-time) in an acute hospital setting with a minimum of three years recent nursing experience (full-time or equivalent hours part-time) in a relevant area. Hold a management qualification be in pursuit of same or willing to undertake one Previous management experience would be an advantage. Possess well-developed leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills. Computer skills. Orthopaedic experience.
