The team focuses on Hollow Core Fiber (HCF) and cable and is preparing for growth driven by cloud success and AI demands, ensuring reliable, high-quality connectivity for all Microsoft services.
As a Senior Cloud Network Engineer, you will design, deploy and operate optical networking solutions using existing and new optical fiber technologies, including Hollow Core Fiber (HCF). You will collaborate with a wider team to develop a global operations strategy, create automation platforms, and operate the network day to day. You will work with engineers to ensure a highly available network that meets capacity demands driven by AI advancements.

Responsibilities

Technology Integration: Oversee the integration of hollow core fiber technologies into the network infrastructure, addressing technical challenges with innovative solutions.

Design and Engineer Solutions: Develop and implement scalable network solutions to meet growing infrastructure demands.

Automation: Develop software solutions to automate operational processes and explore AI-enabled approaches to reduce manual effort.

Operational Excellence: Lead mission-critical operations for solid core and hollow core fiber networks, ensuring reliability and efficiency. Translate hurdles into product improvements.

Metro and Long-Haul Deployment: Design, build, and scale networks across metro and long-haul domains, developing standardized tooling and best practices for efficiency and scalability.

Continuous Improvement: Stay current with optical networking and AI advancements and incorporate new knowledge to enhance performance and reliability of AI-optimized optical networks.

Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:

Technical experience in network design, development, and automation

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field

Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field

Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field

Other Qualifications

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check at hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

Automation experience with programming languages such as Python, C#, JavaScript, SQL, or Rust.

Technical experience with optical transceiver design, validation, and testing using coherent, direct-detection, and WDM technologies.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to learn and adapt to new technologies.

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

A customer-first mentality with focus on delivering high-quality service.
