Vacancy for Ad Astra Fellow - Lecturer/Assistant Professor in AI and Digital Cultural Heritage at University College Dublin

21 February 2025

Dublin, Ireland

Full-Time

Applications are sought for Ad Astra Fellow - Lecturer/Assistant Professor in AI and Digital Cultural Heritage within the College of Social Sciences and Law.

UCD School of Information and Communications is undergoing a major period of growth, with successful undergraduate and graduate educational programmes and an ambitious research agenda across various subfields including library and information studies, communication and media studies, digital policy, human-computer interaction, information systems, science/technology/society (STS), applied artificial intelligence, and critical digital media. The school aims to recruit an Ad Astra Fellow in AI and Digital Cultural Heritage to provide research leadership within the school and across the wider university. Reporting to the Head of School, the Fellow will play a key role in research, scholarship, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and academic administration, management, and professional organization within Information and Communication Studies, in collaboration with colleagues across the College of Social Sciences and Law and throughout UCD.

The School of Information & Communication Studies is committed to research-led education. The candidate will conduct research in AI and Digital Cultural Heritage that supports high-quality teaching and lead innovations in research and teaching. They will also work to expand partnerships with sectoral stakeholders nationally and internationally. The candidate is expected to seek research funding opportunities to develop capacity and foster interdisciplinary interests across the college and university, with the goal of establishing a dedicated research group in AI and digital cultural heritage studies to enhance UCD’s profile in this area.

The MSc in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) at ICS is relevant to this research area and attracts applicants from North America, Europe, and Ireland. The Fellow will aim to grow graduate enrolments in this field and pursue funding opportunities to develop AI and GLAM (Gallery, Library, Archive, Museum) research, providing pathways for PhD candidates from 2026. The candidate will contribute to the revised and accredited MLIS programme, enhancing digital cultural heritage offerings. They will also design a new interdisciplinary AI-focused module to be delivered across MSc in Human-Computer Interaction, MSc in Communication and Media, and MLIS programmes, fostering synergies within the School. Additionally, the Fellow will contribute to developing new undergraduate modules for the BSc in Social Science (ICS) and BA in Creative and Cultural Institutions, to enrich ICS undergraduate offerings and explore the potential for an AI-related major in the undergraduate DN700 BSc programme.

Aligned with UCD’s new HEA-supported micro-credential strategy, the Fellow will support the development of micro-credentials in AI and digital GLAM studies, addressing skills development needs in the Irish cultural heritage sector.
