The AI research team conducts world-class research in Intelligent Operations and Management of future Autonomous Telecommunication Networks, influencing market and product development to deliver business value. The team works on production datasets in close collaboration with Domain Experts and Software Engineers. Large Language Models (LLMs) are explored for decision-making tasks and autonomous network capabilities.
As a Principal AI Researcher , you will apply your experience in building compact multi-modal LLMs for general question-answering, reasoning and planning to areas such as network self-healing (fault localisation and troubleshooting, root cause analysis, fault remediation planning) and network self-optimization, aiming to combine RL-based self-adaptive decision-making with LLMs. Domain knowledge of telco network operations and management is encouraged.

Responsibilities Identify the state-of-the-art AI technologies (industry and academic) for Autonomous Telecommunication Networks, with emphasis on Large Language Models for general Q&A, reasoning, and planning for network self-healing and self-optimization use cases.
Lead solution design based on use cases and technologies and guide the team to refine it.
Contribute to rapid, iterative development of validated software prototypes based on AI technologies and benchmark alternative solutions.
Work closely with Domain Experts, Data Engineers, and AI researchers. Collaborate with product development teams and partners to productionise AI technologies, including providing source code and design documents.
Contribute technical insights and strategic planning to maintain Huawei's technological leadership and propose innovative solutions for Autonomous Telecommunication.

Requirements PhD in Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning and/or Natural Language Processing.
5+ years of industrial or post-doctoral research experience in Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning.
Strong hands-on experience with language model technology, especially Large Language Models; foundation models for decision making are a plus.
Good mathematics and statistics background.
Strong programming skills in Python.
Practical experience with ML frameworks (e.g., Scikit-Learn, PyTorch).
Problem solving ability and track record of developing new algorithms from open source initiatives and research papers.
Domain knowledge of telco networks is a plus.
Publication track record in ML/CS conferences and journals (e.g., ICML, ECML, NIPS, AAAI, IJCAI, IJCNN) is a plus.
