Staff Cloud Software Engineer

Key responsibilities:
1. Make independent technical contributions to help the team deliver its commitments. In particular:
1. Understand the technical landscape of the project and make decisions about it.
2. Make independent technical contributions, especially for the most foundational or challenging parts of the project.
3. Deliver Kubernetes Device Plug-ins and extensions to ensure our platforms and microservices running on them can be orchestrated and managed from the cloud.
4. Implement workload placement methods to maximise the performance of Cloud and HPC workloads on our platforms.
5. Deliver cloud observability of our platforms by integrating into popular frameworks (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, etc.) ensuring our platforms meet Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) needs.
6. Integrate with popular Fleet Management frameworks for managing fleets of our platforms running in Kubernetes Clusters.
7. Work with ecosystem partners to integrate into their stacks (RedHat OpenShift, Canonical Kubernetes, SUSE Rancher, etc.).
8. Utilize cloud services (compute, storage, databases, networking, etc.) to build scalable applications.
1. Develop APIs and integrations for cloud-based services.
1. Develop, test, and integrate on our pre-silicon (simulators, emulation, FPGAs) and silicon environments.
2. Implement and manage continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for cloud applications.
3. Collaborate with DevOps teams to automate deployment processes and manage releases.
4. Ensure applications and infrastructure are secure, adhering to best practices for identity and access management, encryption, and data protection.
5. Stay up to date with cloud security standards and compliance regulations.
6. Document technical specifications and system architecture.
7. Contribute upstream where appropriate.
1. Interact with colleagues across projects to unblock issues or to reach consensus on technical topics. In particular:
1. Interact with engineers and leads from their and other teams to unblock issues, or to reach consensus on technical topics.
2. Work with hardware teams, influencing hardware/software co-design.
3. Work with teams developing compilers, firmware, AI stacks, and middleware, and contribute as necessary.
4. Collaborate with colleagues through code reviews, bug triaging, design documents.
5. Contribute to shared team responsibilities (CI failure triaging, documentation, code fixits, rotations).
1. Provide technical guidance to more junior team members, also acting as a mentor.
2. Review team artifacts (design documents, code changes) both for correctness and for code quality and consistency.
3. Identify opportunities for code and/or process improvement.
4. Loop in directors and above as needed, for instance to surface potential risks or get feedback based on area-level technical knowledge.
5. Collaborate with program managers for task and deliverable tracking, as well as process improvements.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor or Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience in the relevant field (more than 10 years).
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, etc.).
- Experience with Kubernetes and Kubernetes device plug-ins.
- Experience with Docker.
- Experience delivering cloud-hosted microservices at scale.
- Strong knowledge of networking, databases, and distributed systems.
- Familiarity with IaC tools (Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, etc.).
- Experience with observability tools (ELK, OpenTelemetry, InfluxDB, Prometheus, Grafana, AWS Cloud Watch, etc.).
- Experience with standard tools for source control (git), continuous integration, task management (Jira).
- Team player: communicative and collaborative person who focuses on the outcome of the team above individual needs.
- Curious about learning new technologies/stacks.
- Can-do attitude, proactive and willing to step up and resolve any obstacle. Self-aware, self-starter, and self-motivated.
- Experience leading teams at the technical level (not necessarily with a formal management role).
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with service meshes (ISTIO, Envoy, LinkerD, etc.).
- Experience with lightweight Kubernetes (K3s, K0s, MicroK8s, MiniKube, MicroShift, etc.).
- Experience with RISC-V development at the assembly-language level.
- Experience with GitOps (Cluster + Apps + Policies).
- Experience with Kubeflow.
- Experience with kernel and/or device driver development.
- Experience with emulators and simulators (Qemu, Gem5, Spike).
- Experience with hypervisor technology (KVM, Xen).
- Experience with open source software development.
