Software Development Manager
In Route 53, our mission is to make DNS invisible for our customers. It just works. Are you ready to create systems to power one of the largest e-commerce companies in the world? Amazon.com has over 70 million customers, and developers all over the world rely on our storage, compute, and virtualised services via Amazon Web Services. We support distributed systems at massive, and ever-growing, scale. We rapidly integrate new technologies to expand our customer offerings. Our success depends on our world-class network infrastructure and our goal is to become “The Infrastructure Platform” for the world.
As our team grows, the AWS Infrastructure DNS team is seeking enthusiastic and talented Software Development Manager to lead a team that builds and operates the large-scale DNS systems used to drive the Amazon fleet. You will own systems that are critical to the platforms that Amazon's global retail, AWS and Kindle businesses run upon -- the DNS services in Amazon's data centers and integration of Amazon's systems with Amazon Route 53 to manage public DNS.
This is your opportunity to pave the path for a new generation of DNS systems, to grow as a technology leader, and to work with some really smart people. You are great fun to work with. You enjoy being a really great people manager. Building, motivating and mentoring a world-class systems & software engineering team is the most important part of this role. You should have a proven track record in recruiting and retaining top talent and excel in day-to-day people and performance management tasks.
You have strong Agile and project delivery experience. This will include helping innovate and invent new value-add services layered on top of our existing services. You will need excellent technical project management skills to deliver product roadmap items as well as other cross-team projects.
You have a strong engineering background with an understanding of OO Design and DNS Technologies, network and OS expertise is a plus. Ideally, you have past experience working as a senior software development engineer. You enjoy keeping your technical skills reasonably current, to the point that you can still contribute to architecture discussions and code reviews. You regularly take part in deep-dive troubleshooting exercises and drive technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues.
You also have strong operational experience and have a track record operating highly available fault tolerant systems. You know how to run a tight, lean, efficient operation. You will want to measure everything and be very data driven using metrics, monitoring and alarming to measure and improve the operational processes and performance of your team. You thrive operating in a fast moving, dynamic environment.
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
Technical and People Management, handle multiple priorities at once, find paths forward in difficult situations and lead independently.
Develop the best in the team and the organisation. Keep pushing for higher coding, testing and operational standards. Maintain relationships with key customers and seek product feedback on new ideas. Roll your sleeves and get involves in technical work, whether it is building a system or refactoring a code base. Keep improving the team and organisation structure by identifying opportunities to do things faster, better and more efficiently.
A day in the life
Be a leader-servant of a team of high performing software engineers with relentless high standards. You will need to arbitrate difficult situations with no clear path forward. Participate in design review meetings and meaningfully contribute. Make contributions to code. Participate in an escalation rotation to make sure we keep our services highly available.
About the team
We are serious about career progression, growing engineers across many levels and life-work balance. We are looking for a manager with similar ethos and somebody who can make trade-offs and high impact decisions.
