The Scientific Support Specialist provides critical support to the laboratory service, assisting with routine processing and coordination to meet the hospital's mission, values, vision, and strategic plan.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and enforce procedures related to all laboratory areas and testing equipment.
- Apply and implement operational procedures to optimize resource use.
- Implement a quality management program that prioritizes patient needs and measures performance and client satisfaction.
- Perform scientific work to INAB and JCI Accreditation Standards.
- Prioritize and organize work during busy periods and coordinate multiple concurrent testing.
- Collaborate with staff on new ideas and technologies according to hospital policies.
- Participate in registration and custody of Laboratory stocks according to policy.
- Record and investigate non-conformances, complaints, and defects in supplies and equipment, and report findings to laboratory management.
- Support research projects with medical and scientific staff.
- Contribute to training of the laboratory team.
- Be a professional, punctual, and dedicated member of the laboratory team promoting open communication.
- Communicate clearly and courteously with laboratory team members and clients.
- Possess membership or be eligible for membership of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM)/CORU or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 year in-service training across all disciplines. Experience in Histology essential. Cut-up experience advantageous.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a professional and dedicated attitude.
- Appreciation of all aspects of the provision of a modern laboratory service.
- Familiarity with accreditation criteria and objectives.
- Familiarity with legislation as it pertains to the provision of a quality laboratory service.
- Demonstrate capacity to be part of a team.
- Understand quality control criteria.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems.
- Familiarity with other hospital departments and their relationships with the laboratory.
- Familiarity with current health and safety legislation as it pertains to the laboratory.
- Familiarity with IT packages supporting office and laboratory services.
