Job Description

The National Violence Reduction Unit (NVRU) is a high-intensity, psychologically informed service for individuals in custody experiencing psychological distress and displaying violent behavior. The unit operates separately as a national unit within the Midlands Prison, Co. Laois.

A key feature of the NVRU is the enhanced role of the Psychology Service in the day-to-day management of the unit. This includes provision of reflective space for staff, centrality of relational security, and psychological assessment and intervention to clients.

The appointed Grade II Psychologist will support the ongoing development and running of the NVRU. All suitable referrals undergo a comprehensive four-month assessment by the Senior Psychologist and multi-disciplinary team. Those selected will have a Care and Management Plan developed based on this assessment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering bespoke, multi-modal evidence-based psychological interventions as per the Care and Management Plans, ensuring recommendations are linked to the individual's psychological formulation. They will also supervise and support operational staff, fostering a culture that promotes joint operational/psychological approach.
