Job Overview

The Marine Institute is a national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation. The institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland's marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring.

Role Description

The Scientific and Technical Officer (STO) will work within an Application Development team and collaborate closely with the FEAS data management team to develop and support software applications that help deliver the Data Collection Multi Annual Programme (DCMAP). The job will focus on improving and migrating existing applications and databases to newer technology, and on developing new data collection solutions including those required for increased use of electronic data capture and self-sampling.

Key Responsibilities
  • To improve data quality by allowing best practices in quality control and assurance to be applied to all data
  • To allow more effective sample tracking from collection through its lifespan
  • To allow different datasets to be combined more easily
  • To allow easier extraction for end-users such as ICES, the RCGs, and EU
  • To allow easier data publishing through systems such as EMODnet Biology
  • To ease maintenance by utilising common technological platforms
Requirements

Eligible Candidates must be:

  • A citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA)
  • A citizen of the United Kingdom (UK)
  • A citizen of Switzerland pursuant to the agreement between the EU and Switzerland on the free movement of persons
  • A non-EEA citizen who is a spouse or child of an EEA or UK or Swiss citizen and has a stamp 4 or a Stamp 5 visa
