Environmental Conservation Volunteer Role

Off-grid environmental conservation is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the protection and restoration of New Zealand's unique native flora and fauna.
The sanctuary located in the cloud-forest of Tutamoe Peak in Northland, New Zealand, is home to the endangered kiwi bird and the rare giant kauri snail. You will join a team of like-minded individuals working together to protect this lush forest and restore it to its natural splendor.
We operate on sustainable principles and are totally off-grid, with most structures and tools recycled from other projects. Our collaboration with the Department of Conservation involves protecting and monitoring precious wildlife in various forests, each with its unique characteristics.
You will participate in a wide range of activities including:
- cutting and marking tracks
- installing, refilling and monitoring bait stations
- monitoring kiwi, kokako, and rodents
- monitoring bats, lizards, and freshwater fish
- entering data
- weeding and planting the herb garden
- building and landscaping
- chopping wood and more
No volunteer experience is the same, and you never know what exciting tasks will come up while you are here. We balance maintenance and sustainability activities so everyone gets a well-rounded stay.
Your day will begin with breakfast, followed by clean-up. Morning work activities take place from 10:00–12:00 PM, followed by lunch. Afternoon working activities run from 1:00–4:00 PM, after which you will have free time or leisure time until dinner. One day a week, you can relax, head into town to use the internet, or explore some of the sights of the Kauri Coast.
