About the Role

This Radiology IT Expert position requires a deep understanding of clinical and technical aspects of imaging services, with experience in managing Radiology IT systems and leading operational management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the operational management of Radiology IT systems, working closely with the Radiology Services Manager.
  • Manage the RIS/PACS service, ensuring seamless integration with other hospital systems.
  • Provide quality radiology services to patients, adhering to professional best practices and hospital guidelines.
  • Spend at least 50% of your time performing clinical duties as a Radiographer, as required by the RSM.
  • Take responsibility for electronic image capture, storage, and review through PACS and tele-Radiology, as well as patient information and results reporting through RIS.
  • Attend local, divisional, ICS, and external meetings to stay informed and contribute expertise.
  • Communicate complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to support operational and financial decisions.
  • Collaborate with staff and stakeholders to ensure effective contribution to patient management within Radiology and the wider hospital.
  • Provide documentary evidence to support business cases for clinical systems.
  • Ensure projects comply with governance policies and participate in departmental governance.
  • Oversee the efficient operation of PACS and RIS, supporting quality assurance processes and best practices.
  • Act as system administrator, ensuring maintenance and housekeeping arrangements are in place.
  • Facilitate the addition of new imaging modalities to the system.
  • Assist in developing PACS and long-term strategic planning with Imaging Department leads.
  • Work closely with the Applications Team to support cross-skilling, training, and development.
  • Contribute to delivering an effective and responsive team.
  • Encourage high professional and technical skills in staff through personal example, development, and training.
  • Develop contingency procedures for planned and unplanned downtime.
  • Provide specialist technical services and analyze complex technical problems related to system data, workflow, hardware, interfacing, or networking.
  • Offer solutions to complex issues, explaining them in a non-technical language to clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Establish and support operational policy and working procedures for routine Radiology and IT system use.
  • Support clinical and non-clinical staff in understanding how clinical systems enhance efficient healthcare delivery.
  • Interrogate system databases for statistical analysis.
  • Work with the Applications Team to ensure adequate training for maintaining and supporting Radiology systems.
  • Encourage high professional and technical standards in all staff, using personal example, training, and development.
  • Provide first-line support for application-level problems as needed.
  • Makes recommendations for additional training initiatives.
  • Devise and provide training for RIS/PACS users.
  • Train non-radiological staff reviewing images in wards or clinics.
  • Train clinicians acquiring and assessing radiological images.
  • Train Divisional and Clinical Administration staff.
  • Retrain staff following incorrect practices that result in errors.
  • Give presentations to deepen understanding of clinical systems among staff and students.
  • Perform system administrator duties.
  • Evaluate maintenance and housekeeping arrangements to support daily Radiology system operation.
  • Verify software and hardware upgrades before deployment.
  • Ensure system database accuracy and update information with user communities.
  • Document handovers to support information prior to go-live and maintain documentation.
  • Manage and review system utilization, user privileges, and folder management.
  • Develop and implement procedures for planned/unplanned system downtime, including robust 24/7/365 technical support.
  • Function as a knowledge source for professionals, collaborating with staff and stakeholders to build alignment around clinical systems implementation.
  • Assign patient images to correct folders and reconcile incorrect data.
  • Identify patterns suggesting incorrect practice or equipment faults.
  • Support re-training and procedures with staff not following protocols.
  • Have detailed understanding of Data Protection Act (2018), General Data Protection Regulation (2016), and relevant legislation.
  • Ensure current clinical system use adheres to legislation and recommended practices.
  • Verify proposed clinical system uses do not breach relevant legislation.
  • Collaborate with IT department and equipment manufacturers to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Develop procedures/guidelines, such as issuing logins/passwords and clinical system use guidelines.
  • Adhere to infection control standards.
  • Report IT equipment faults appropriately and plan maintenance/repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Notify Professional Leads, Service Leads, and Digital Services about equipment outages/service provision compromises.
  • Participate in departmental audit programs, Quality Assurance, and ensure Radiology/Clinical Systems comply with Data Protection Act/governance requirements.
  • Implement quality control program to ensure IT equipment is maintained/handled correctly.
  • Actively participate in clinical components of the roster.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills consistent with Hospital Values.
  • Support/deputize for RSM as needed.
  • Demonstrate expertise/knowledge of techniques/processes involved in producing consistent high-quality imaging.
  • Support development/embedding of protocols/guidelines ensuring consistency in service provision.
  • Support management/development of Radiology department to provide quality service by utilizing resources efficiently/safely.
  • Adapt staffing/service provision to workload demands at short notice.
  • Develop/promote Radiology department focusing on quality of service/optimizing patient pathway within available service provision.
  • Actively participate/support team development in optimizing/developing quality.
  • Facilitate dissemination of knowledge within clinical team regarding image quality/changing/developing practice.
  • Manage resources efficiently.
  • Have in-depth knowledge/support in implementing hospital/Radiology department policies/procedures.
  • Maintain equipment performance/take corrective action if faults noted.
  • Respond to verbal complaints from patients/carers.
  • Participate in departmental audits.
  • Liaise with clinical teams to ensure effective communication/multi-disciplinary working.
  • Actively participate in governance requirements/assurance for Radiology department, including risk management/incident investigation/documentation.
  • Actively support consistent implementation of Human Resources Policies.
  • Maintain Continued Professional Development/Code of Conduct consistent with CORU requirements.
  • Liaise with Medical Physics on safety/issues/other operational issues as appropriate.
  • Effectively communicate with Radiography staff to achieve KPI targets/developments.
  • Undertake/participate in team building/training of Radiography Staff.
  • Notify Radiography Services Manager of leave according to hospital policy.
  • Maintain environment conducive to learning/development.
