Clinical Nurse Specialist Role Overview

This position involves working as a key member of multidisciplinary liaison psychiatry – psychological medicine team, providing care in the Emergency Department and across the Hospital to patients who experience psychological health difficulties and psychiatric disorders.

  • Evaluate specific clinical problems in conjunction with medical and surgical teams, performing initial assessments of patients and providing specialist intervention where appropriate, to help arrange aftercare.
  • Develop strong relationships with medical staff, paramedical staff, psychiatry and psychological services, palliative care services, General Practitioners, and other staff involved in patient services, ensuring delivery of a patient-focused, coordinated, and consistent service.
Responsibilities
  • Establish expertise in the assessment and management of the full spectrum of psychological health difficulties in patients in the general hospital.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and daily huddles to ensure information dissemination and issue discussion.
  • Provide access to relevant information for patients, enabling understanding of their condition and available treatment options.
Duties
  • Collaborate with medical teams to evaluate clinical problems, coordinate investigation, therapy, and patient follow-up.
  • Offer specialist knowledge and expertise to surgical and medical teams working in the acute hospital, such as advice on managing psychological distress, disturbed behavior, confusional states, and substance misuse.
Qualifications
  • Be registered in the psychiatric Division of the active Register held by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or be entitled to registration.
  • Have a minimum of one year post-registration full-time experience or an aggregate of one year full-time experience in the division of the register in which the application is being made.
  • Hold a third-level qualification at not less than level 9 or higher award that is relevant to the specialist area of care (equivalent to 60 ECTS or above) and meets the requirements for specialist practice as set out by the National Council for Nursing and Midwifery.
