Staff Grade Medical Scientist – Microbiology

Part-time (20 hours per week, 4 hours per day, core hours 10am–4pm)

The Role
A hospital in Limerick is seeking a Medical Scientist to join its microbiology laboratory team. This is a hands-on role working across the benches in a hospital setting, focusing on patient samples, clinical workflows, and maintaining ISO standards.
You’ll be involved in bacteriology, cell culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and blood culture workflows. The role also includes supporting quality systems, using LIS platforms, and contributing to continuous improvement in laboratory processes.
What You’ll Do
Perform microbiological testing on a wide range of patient specimensWork across the benches in bacteriology, cell culture, and blood cultureCarry out AST and escalate critical results appropriatelyOperate and maintain systems including Vitek 2 Compact, BacT/ALERT 3D, MALDI-TOF, and GeneXpertMaintain compliance with ISO and GLP standards in a hospital laboratory settingContribute to internal quality control, EQA, and audit readinessSupport LIS workflows and ensure integrity of clinical dataCollaborate with infection control and clinical teams to improve patient outcomesWhat We’re Looking For
Minimum 2 years’ experience working on the benches in a hospital medical laboratoryMinimum 2 years’ post-qualification experience in microbiologyKnowledge of ISO and quality systems in a hospital/clinical environmentExperience in AST, blood cultures, bacteriology, and cell cultureFamiliarity with molecular diagnostics and LIS platformsStrong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skillsWhat’s On Offer
