Senior Pharmacy Technician Role Overview:

We are currently recruiting a Senior Pharmacy Technician for UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Ireland.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and cost-effective management and monitoring of new medications on the UPMC formulary, as well as assisting in establishing and maintaining systems for managing medicine stock shortages.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Patient Care and Safety: Ensure the care and safety of patients is the highest priority at all times.
  • Core Values: Understand, model, and promote UPMC core values: Quality and Safety, Dignity and Respect, Caring and Listening, Responsibility and Integrity, Excellence and Innovation.
  • Medication Management: Support the safe and cost-effective management and monitoring of new medications on the UPMC formulary.
  • Pharmacy Technical Services: Assist in establishing and maintaining systems for managing medicine stock shortages and promoting standardization of Pharmacy Technical services across UPMC sites in Ireland.
  • Supervision: Supervise requisitions, prescriptions, extemporaneous compounding, stock control, procurement, and pre-packaging activities.
  • Pharmaceuticals Handling: Ensure pharmaceuticals are received, checked, stored, and handled in accordance with best practices and legislation.
  • SOP Development: Develop, maintain, and audit SOPs for all pharmacy technical services.
  • Service Delivery Standards: Define standards for service delivery, develop KPIs, and support staff induction, training, and performance management.
  • Leadership and Teamwork: Lead and innovate in pharmacy service improvements, coordinate daily operations, and foster teamwork.
  • Mentorship and Professional Development: Mentor staff, ensure HR policies are followed, and support the Pharmacy Transformation Strategy.
  • Interdepartmental Liaison: Liaise with other departments, participate in accreditation, and promote sustainability initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Pharmaceutical Technicians Diploma: A Pharmaceutical Technicians Diploma from the University of Dublin or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of hospital experience, relevant knowledge, a clean driving license, and flexibility to work across UPMC sites.
Desirable Criteria:
  • Management and Leadership Training: Management and leadership training or experience.
  • Procurement and Line Management: Experience in procurement, broad pharmacy practice, and line management.
  • Leadership Skills: Strong planning, leadership, communication, SOP development, change management, and performance review skills.
