We are seeking a pragmatic and technically accomplished Lead System Engineer to evolve our IT systems and infrastructure.
This role is ideal for an experienced systems professional ready to lead technical initiatives, drive operational excellence, and opportunity to grow as team lead.
This role is hands-on and operationally focused, with leadership and mentoring responsibilities.
It does not carry the full strategic or executive remit of people manager but is pivotal in ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of Scorebuddy's systems and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Systems & Infrastructure Management: Deploy, configure, and maintain IT systems in Linux (Debian preferred) and Windows environments, including Kubernetes (K8s) clusters
Manage and optimise cloud infrastructure, with a focus on AWS (Azure knowledge advantageous)
Oversee database systems: MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB (NoSQL)
Security & Monitoring
Implement and enforce cybersecurity measures, including disaster recovery planning and incident response
Monitor system performance and reliability using ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) and TIGK (Telegraf, InfluxDB, Grafana, Kapacitor) stacks
Ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g., ISO-27001, SOC-2) and maintain audit readiness
Automation & DevOps
Develop and maintain automation scripts and workflows using Terraform and Ansible
Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines with tools such as Jenkins and GitHub Actions
Foster a DevOps culture, promoting best practices for automation and deployment
Team Leadership & Collaboration
Mentor junior and mid-level system administrators, supporting their professional development
Collaborate with development, product, and IT teams to deliver infrastructure projects and innovative solutions
Maintain comprehensive system documentation and participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for critical incidents
What are we looking for
Required
5+ years in system administration or IT operations, with strong Linux (Debian preferred) expertise
BSc/MSc in Computer Science, IT Management, or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience
Proficiency in cloud services, particularly AWS; Azure or Google Cloud knowledge is a plus
Experience managing SQL (MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB) databases
Advanced scripting skills: Bash (essential), Python and PowerShell (advantageous)
Expertise in Terraform and Ansible for automation
Familiarity with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions) and DevOps practices
Strong troubleshooting skills and networking knowledge
Experience with Git and distributed team workflows
Excellent communication and time management skills
Nice to have
Experience with Kubernetes and Windows environments
Knowledge of ELK and TIGK stack monitoring tools
Familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban)
Programming experience in PHP, Go, or Python
