Job Title: Regional Programme Director- Dublin South Leinster (includes TCD, UCD/Kildare and Midlands Schemes) for the National Specialist Training Programme in General Practice         

Reporting to:  National Director of Specialist Training in General Practice             

Contract type: Permanent

Time Commitment: Part time, 2 days per week (equivalent to 5 sessions per week)

About the Irish College of GPs

The Irish College of GPs (the College) is the postgraduate medical training body (PGTB) responsible for postgraduate education, training and research in the medical specialty of General Practice. The College has a national advisory role in relation to medical standards and engages with the Medical Council, Department of Health and Children, the Health Service Executive and the Health Information & Quality Authority among others. As a membership organisation, the Irish College of GPs is responsible for providing and supporting the continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,000. The College is the PGTB accredited by the Medical Council to provide professional training for doctors wishing to enter the specialty of General Practice.

About GP Training

The College is undergoing a period of significant growth in line with Irish health workforce demands. Consequently, the total number of doctors in GP training is growing significantly.

 

Under the National Training Programme the GP training schemes are organised into four regions: 

      West (including Donegal, Sligo and Western Scheme)

      South (including Mid-West, South West, Cork and South East Scheme)

      Dublin South Leinster (including TCD, UCD/Kildare and Midlands Scheme)

      Dublin North Leinster (including RCSI and North Dublin City, with Northeast Scheme)

               

The Role:

Working under the direction of the National Director for GP Training, the Regional Programme Director will be responsible for ensuring the overall effectiveness, quality, and consistency of General Practice training regionally and contributing to the enhancement and development of the National Specialist Training Programme in General Practice.  


This position requires a strategic approach to support the implementation of the Irish College of GP's vision for GP Training (ICGP Report of the GP Task Force, March 2019).


Standard Duties

Duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to the following:


Regional duties and responsibilities:

      Overall responsibility for the operation of the Specialist Training Schemes in General Practice within the relevant region.

      Oversee, manage and support the work of the Scheme Director in those Schemes.

      Oversee the implementation of the College's policies, procedures and conventions throughout the relevant region.

      Support recruitment activities both at a regional and national level.

      Support the sourcing of hospital posts regionally.

      Oversee and manage the quality assurance processes for each of the Specialist Training Schemes within the relevant region.

      Ensure all trainees in the relevant region meet the requirements of CCSCT.

      Identify synergies, connectivity and dependencies across the Specialist Training Schemes within the region.

      Management of the Regional Competency Committee.

 

National duties and responsibilities:

      Support the National Director for GP Training in the development of the Irish College of GPs National Specialist Training Programme in General Practice.

      Assume responsibility for the brief of additional portfolio

Person Specification

Experience & Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Extensive experience of GP training either in Ireland or internationally.
  • Must be in active general practice
  • Familiarity with the College's GP Training Curriculum, the vision for National Specialist Training Programme and demonstrable commitment to the continuous improvement of the training programme.
  • Familiarity with the relevant region.
  • A demonstrable record of leadership and management in postgraduate medical education/ training.

 

 Desirable:

  • Higher qualification in medical education / health professionals' education (or equivalent).
  • Excellent communicator, with demonstrated capability to effectively manage interactions with key stakeholders.
  • Have demonstrable experience in quality assurance in higher education.
  • Have a demonstrable innovative approach to continuous improvement and project work.
