Summary
This position has the responsibility and authority to provide a lead role in the ideation, development, design, implementation, test and transfer to manufacturing medical devices in support of major programs and organizational initiatives. The Senior Systems Engineer is expected to proactively provide technical solutions that require broad knowledge in the engineering field of study as well as an understanding of medical device specific applications, materials and processes. The Senior Systems Engineer will communicate effectively with Technical Management and may sometimes represent Technical Management in support of various business activities. Experience in design and development of In Vitro Diagnostics and/or Diagnostic Imaging devices preferred.
Detailed Description
Understands and integrates top-level business goals with their technical activities and supports strategic planning / budgeting. Leads and guides in the development and establishment of new technologies and core technical competencies. Identifies and implements solutions to unmet medical device needs in alignment with the strategic plan. Integrates new materials and processes into manufacturing. Ability to communicate with customers and translate unmet customer needs into useful articulated product requirements. Lead and provide guidance in the development of prototypes, verification/validation units and product specifications, including material specifications, assembly drawings and manufacturing documentation. Establishes the test plan, device limitations and product acceptance criteria. Responsible for the timely completion of the technical deliverables for themselves and the technical team members. May provide sustaining engineering direction and support for existing products. Has a continual awareness of new and advancing technologies and provides conceptual and practical applications for products in the Health Technology industry. Travel to meet with customers, suppliers, and Celestica Design Centers.
Knowledge/Skills/Competencies
Experience in fluid mechanics and the design of fluid handling systems implemented in the In Vitro Diagnostic, Health Science, Life Science and Renal Dialysis fields Experience in mechatronics and the design of complex electromechanical systems Ability to take verbal instruction as part of strategic planning and execution including implementation of complex new product development programs. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. Applies extensive technical expertise and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Able to apply engineering analysis techniques/tools (e.g., Mechanical CAD, Electrical CAD, Simulation and Modeling, Schematic Capture, PCB Layout) as well as define new tools in support of growing core competencies. Develops technical solutions to complex problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Good understanding of the market needs to effectively influence technological advancements or new technologies for applications in products Able to lead, work and communicate effectively with other engineers, designers, surgeons, marketers and suppliers to develop products from concept through commercialization in a cross-functional team. Experience in translating User Needs to System Requirements. Design for Six Sigma Green, Black or Master Black Belt preferred. Effective oral, written communication and presentation skills both within and external to the organization. Exercises good judgment when communicating to all levels in the business organization. Must be able to handle multiple tasks/projects and obtain closure on projects and work within their area of responsibility even when results depend on others.
Physical Demands
Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment. Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data. Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required. Occasional travel may be required.
Typical Experience
10 years with a BS degree of relevant product development experience from concept through commercialization; or a minimum of 8 years with a MS degree and typically greater than 5 years with a PhD.
Typical Education
Bachelor’s degree in technical field such as physics, electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering
MS or PhD degree preferred.
