The Purpose of the Role

The Department of Political Science, School of Social Sciences and Philosophy is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Political Science and Asian Politics, to commence on 1st September 2024. This is a tenure-track position.


The School wishes to make the appointment in the area of Asian politics. The successful candidate will study some aspect of Asian politics, with the specific subregion (East Asia, South Asia, etc.) being open. Applications are welcome from the subfields of either comparative politics or international relations. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate outstanding excellence in teaching and have experience in teaching as lead instructor for a variety of modules. The successful candidate should be able to teach and supervise undergraduate and masters-level dissertation topics in various areas of political science, as well as to contribute flexibly across the range of the Department’s teaching needs. The successful candidate will have an active research agenda/publication strategy in Asian politics as well as an approach to research that complements the Department of Political Science’s existing strengths in comparative and institutional analysis. An ability to teach courses in research methods and/or research design at both undergraduate and postgraduate/MSc level is highly desirable.


The normal teaching load for an Assistant Professor in the department would be four semester-length modules per year. A single semester-length module normally requires 22 hours of FTF teaching. Assistant professors are also expected to do a certain amount of postgraduate research supervision and to contribute to the administration of the programme and/or the department more generally.

Main Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

Research

demonstrate ability to engage actively in research. Applications should show the potential to establish a strong record of research and publication in political science;contribute to the international reputation of the Department of Political Science through high-quality, high-impact publications and research;represent the Department of Political Science at international conferences; seek actively to obtain research funding.

Teaching

contribute to the Department of Political Science’s teaching and supervision programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;possess the capacity to attract postgraduate students to the department, and to supervise postgraduate dissertations;contribute to the development of the Department’s increasing role in supervising undergraduate dissertation projects (“capstones”).

Administration

undertake administrative roles as assigned by the Head of Department and/or Head of School.

Qualifications

an excellent academic record and have completed or be close to completion of a PhD in political science.
