My client is seeking for an efficient and confident Consumer Affairs Representative for maternity cover (Temporary Contract).

More Details about the client:

They are responsible for promoting compliance with, and enforcing protection law in Ireland and strive to improve welfare across the economy by enforcing over 40 legislative instruments, including product safety legislation. They work to influence public debate and policy development, grow public understanding of the importance of open and competitive markets, promote competition and highlight the interests and provide information about their rights, personal finance and product safety, through a helpline, a dedicated section of website, public awareness campaigns and through our various financial education initiatives.

The Role:

The Consumer Protection Manager (DEIC) will play a key role in managing and supporting the activities of the unit which include assessments and engagement with traders in the course of mutual assistance requests for information or enforcement, alerts, coordinated actions to address widespread infringements and sweeps (checks carried out on websites simultaneously to identify potential breaches of EU consumer law in a particular sector).

The Consumer Protection Manager will also have a role in building and maintaining relationships with relevant stakeholders, including consumer and business representatives, and competent authorities at national and international level. In addition, he/she will be required to carry out any other additional tasks that may be assigned to them in order to support the work of the Division and the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

· Develop a set of processes and procedures under EU Regulation 2017/2394, particularly regarding enforcement actions.

· Assess trader compliance with consumer protection legislation by conducting screenings on cases and provide clear legal guidance to other members within the Unit on potential breaches identified within cases’ assessments.

· Manage and assess potential breaches by traders of consumer protection legislation, making recommendations on appropriate courses of action.

· Support to develop and implement work programmes and deliver against responsibilities assigned to the organisation under the different laws and regulations.

· Build, manage and maintain productive and positive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and competent authorities at a local, national, EU and international level.

· Develop inputs for consumer information material, consultation documents and writing reports on consumer protection matters.

· Contribute to the achievement of the strategic goals of the organisation by participating in cross-divisional projects, developing knowledge and familiarity with the broad.

· The Consumer Protection Manager will not be a direct people manager but will be required to work alongside junior members of staff on specific tasks or projects and provide them with assistance and guidance.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

· Minimum level 8 degree in law, business, or regulation.

· At least 2 years relevant work experience in an area related to the role.

For example:

a) Experience within a regulatory or enforcement agency including engagement with internal and external stakeholders.

b) Experience in the private sector may be accepted if it includes experience in engaging with the public sector on legislative matters.

· Experience identifying and analysing potential breaches of legislation against the law and drafting a detailed report that would include a recommendation of next steps.

· The role may be suitable for a paralegal or someone working towards becoming a solicitor in Ireland who is working through the FE exams (Law Society Final Examinations).

· Strong organisational skills with the ability to multi-task in a busy environment, prioritising workstreams and ensuring deadlines are met.

· Demonstrable interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and on one’s own initiative.

· Experience of managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.

· Strong ICT skills, particularly in the application of Microsoft office.

Desirable:

· Experience of engaging with the EU Commission and/or competent authorities at EU level

· Knowledge of Irish and EU consumer law and/or experience advising on criminal investigations/prosecution; regulatory inspections and enforcement powers; or advising in a private or public sector environment on consumer facing issues.

· Relevant qualifications and/or experience in law above the essential requirements.

· At least 2 years’ post-qualification work experience either in a law firm, as a practising barrister, as in-house counsel, or as a legal advisor in the civil/public service.

· Knowledge of Irish and/or European civil and criminal court practice and procedure.
