Job Purpose:
This is a prestigious and influential role at The Irish Times, one of Ireland's leading news and media organisations, delivering agenda-setting political journalism at the highest level. Working closely with the Political Editor, the Political Correspondent will be responsible for breaking major political stories, producing exclusive content, and providing authoritative analysis of Irish and international politics.
This role requires a journalist with deep expertise in Irish political affairs, a strong instinct for investigative reporting, and the ability to deliver fast, accurate, and compelling coverage. The successful candidate will have a high-profile presence across print, digital, and broadcast media, contributing to The Irish Times' leading political coverage across all platforms, including podcasting, video, and social channels.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver exclusive political stories that shape the national agenda and influence public debate.
- Provide expert analysis and interpretation of complex political issues, legislation, and government policy.
- Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts across government, opposition parties, political advisers, and policy experts.
- Work closely with the Political Editor to set the political coverage agenda and ensure in-depth, investigative reporting on key issues.
- Report from Leinster House and other political institutions, providing real-time updates, live analysis, and in-depth reports.
- Produce high-quality, accurate, and insightful copy under tight deadlines, covering breaking news, political developments, and long-form features.
- Originate investigative pieces that go beyond daily news cycles, uncovering the deeper stories behind political decisions and power dynamics.
- Represent The Irish Times across radio, television, and podcasting, contributing to political debate and expert discussions.
- Play a key role in The Irish Times' podcasting output, offering analysis and commentary on major political developments.
- Maintain an active and authoritative presence on social media, engaging with readers and driving public discourse on key issues.
- Collaborate with digital and multimedia teams to enhance storytelling through video, interactive content, and social-first journalism.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have a proven track record in political journalism, with experience reporting on Irish politics at a senior level.
- Demonstrate an ability to break exclusive stories and deliver impactful investigative journalism.
- Have deep knowledge of Ireland's political landscape, institutions, and key figures.
- Be confident in broadcast and multimedia journalism, with experience contributing to podcasts, video analysis, and live media appearances.
- Be highly skilled in writing sharp, engaging, and insightful analysis for a wide readership.
- Have an excellent network of political contacts and the ability to develop sources at the highest levels.
- Be adept at working under pressure, managing multiple stories and deadlines simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Irish a useful but not essential skill
Benefits: Health Insurance, Pension Contribution, Media Platform & Publication Allowance, Sick Leave Cover, Laptop, Mobile Phone, Irish Times Premium Digital Subscription, Income Protection Policy, Corporate Gym Membership, Free Digital GP and Life Assurance Policy.
