Scope of the Role:

The Director of Quality is responsible for leading the standards and the delivery of world-class quality within their remit at both an organisational and Business Unit leadership level. Reporting to the QEHS Director, the role supports a team of Quality professionals within each Business Unit (BU). The person will assure a lean and efficient Quality Management System and will have support in improving and sustaining that system.

Working across a wide remit of both internal and external interfaces, the role delivers standards of excellence through both proactive and reactive engagement. The role relies on the execution of a wide range of Technical Responsibilities that supports best in class delivery, including standards and expectations and supporting the delivery of business-wide Quality campaigns, programmes initiatives, and business improvement activities across the Mercury Group.

Whilst based out of our Head Office in Sandyford, Dublin, there is an expectation that the person will cultivate strong and close working relationships with the BU Quality Leads and BU Leaders to assure the systems are embedded and that lessons, innovation, and knowledge are proactively shared to drive improvement, enhance value, and a positive culture.

The role will require extensive travel to all operational sites across the group and in all geographies. The ability to positively influence our site and BU leadership teams in the support of and drive for world-class Quality standards and behaviours is a key attribute. This coupled with active and consistent engagement with BU leaders in the pursuit of sustaining a culture of "value proposition" toward Quality is a pre-requisite for success.

The role includes being part of the QEHS Leadership Team.

  • Deliver 'hands-on' help, support and assistance to all project, BU stakeholders and to our supply chain at a BU & project level.
  • Develop and maintain a strong network throughout the business, communicating widely and appropriately, to build a positive Quality culture.
  • Identify the need for changes through Quality innovations, lessons learned and legislative updates to the 'Quality Management System' and the delivery of quality on sites.
  • Analyse and identify the opportunities and risks arising from:
  1. Project, sector, client or country specific requirements and identify any necessary improvement or more immediate actions.
  2. Current and future legal and regulatory requirements and identify any necessary strategic or more immediate actions.
  3. Potential new country entry and identify any necessary strategic or more immediate actions.
Create, share and contribute to the approval of the Quality strategy with BU MDs.Act as a medium for connecting people across the division and wider business and supply chain for the benefit of sharing knowledge in particular the BU Quality Managers, Ops and Managing directors.Ensure that the Quality strategy is being tabled at every opportunity and tracked for success.Develop specific 'Contingency/Improvement/Action/Leadership Plans' to address new and emerging opportunities and risks e.g. UK Fire (Safety Act) 2024.Undertake assigned roles in support of wider business requirements, programmes and business improvement initiatives.Frequently identify continuous improvement opportunities to eliminate recurrence, potential or likelihood of risks or events and track costs for rework / replacement / future liability.Evaluate defects and sustain an accurate rolling cost for defects and reworks for quarterly review at board meetings.Oversee the AI process, assures root causes are correct and feeds back preventive close outs to avoid recurrence be it system, training or sharing lessons.Ensures updates relating to significant events are communicated in a timely and appropriate manner.Where needed seek out and appoint an independent and/or external specialist to improve our quality performance.Identify the need for changes or improvements to the QMS through interaction with BU operational needs to enhance defect avoidance and feedback to the 'Quality Management System'.Support the early identification, at procurement and mobilisation stages, of high-risk supply chain partners who require help and intervention to achieve our standards.Highlight gaps and propose improvements to enhance our QMS whilst being conscious about waste, value and lean techniques.Coach and motivate others in the effective implementation of the management systems.Ensure that the output from Quality performance analysis at BU & Divisional level is addressed with appropriate ownership for satisfactory ownership and close out.Proof and approve the accuracy and appropriateness of collated quality data for Divisional events, innovations, lessons learned etc for the relevant board meetings.Prepare, review and approve the quality report / Power BI and raise the key agenda items to the fore to enhance ownership, positive review and closure.Identify, help prepare and present specific and relevant ad hoc quality event and defect reports at BU & Divisional Level.Analysis, trends and presents for awareness and knowledge new and recurring trends collated from sources such as site audits, NCRs, snag lists and independent audits.Oversee the implementation of and approve the 'Internal quality Audit Schedule' annually and track monthly and share the 'Internal Quality Audit Schedule' with BU MDs & Quality leads.Seek out local and external innovations and knit them in where appropriate to enhance efficiency and world-class quality design, manufacture, construction and aftercare.Identify and approve Quality training material for role defined needs.Liaise with LMS to target staff and SC audiences for relevant training needs. Deliver and track Quality training and report a KPI for compliance.Engages with external bodies and industry/business sector groups aligned to our quality goals and BU / Divisional needs.Undertake assigned duties as identified in the 'QEHS Management System'.5 years in a "Director" or similar level role in a €500m + turnover business.12+ years Quality experience in construction/engineering/petrochemical and / or within a multinational manufacturing or Pharma/Advanced Tech environment.Minimum Diploma or Degree in Engineering or Construction or a trade / engineering background. A formal level of training in Quality and / or management systems.ISO Lead Auditor, Negotiation & Influencing skills, Train the Trainer skillset.Desirable to be a chartered member of CQI, IEI, CIOB or other construction related institute or in the process of achieving that level.Data centre, pharma and/or live environment experience.
