Title: Assistant Underwriter – Warranty

Location: Dublin

(Hybrid – Remote working Mon/Fri every week)

Position Overview:

The Assistant Underwriter is responsible for underwriting and providing technical support in this business area while maintaining and improving the market reputation of the AmTrust brand.

The role:
  • Support in developing and underwriting a profitable portfolio of Warranty business as part of the Warranty team, taking ownership of performance for allocated accounts and assisting in acquiring new business.
  • Monitor premiums, costs, and performance metrics for all schemes and advise on any remedial actions as appropriate to ensure long-term portfolio profitability and within company rates of return.
  • Evaluate appropriate risks by considering the risk costs, reinsurance cessions, capital exposure as well as the underwriting and general administrative costs to ensure profitability, using rating models as applicable.
  • Prepare policy terms and conditions, liaising with the Warranty team to ensure robust standardized wordings.
  • Comply with AmTrust’s underwriting control standards.
  • Advise, assist, and service clients on insurance and risk matters to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Foster positive relationships with brokers, clients, and other third parties to get a mutual understanding of both their and AmTrust’s needs.
  • Maintain awareness of the overall AmTrust product range and take advantage of opportunities to introduce other AmTrust products to clients.
  • Leverage networking opportunities within the business to develop standardized underwriting policy and best practice within AmTrust.
  • Develop best practice and disseminate business and class knowledge within the Warranty team.
  • Work with the Warranty team to maximize profitable business opportunities, including sharing market information, best practices, and cross-selling opportunities.
  • Production of presentations and technical input into marketing literature as required.
  • Comply with AmTrust procedures, policies, processes, and regulations relevant to the role. Undertake relevant training on AmTrust policies and procedures as delivered by your line manager, the HR team, or Compliance team.
  • Ensure that products are customer-focused, competitive from a pricing and coverage standpoint, and compliant with all relevant insurance laws, regulations, and Company strategic plans.
  • Support strategies and plans in place for the management and control of key portfolio risk exposures.
  • Monitor the marketplace to identify, assess, and make recommendations about underwriting opportunities and/or threats presented by new and/or emerging risks and opportunities.
  • Assist in periodic underwriting audits, both of directly written business or business written through cover holders/external underwriting agencies, to ensure philosophies and procedures are being followed and product loss ratios are at an acceptable level.
  • Demonstrate appropriate, consistent, and complete consideration of our customers and potential customers’ interests throughout our business, on a continuous basis.
  • Engage with other departments and key stakeholders within the business as required.
  • Other duties may be assigned in order to meet the ongoing needs of the organisation.
  • Occasional travel to meet with clients as required.

  • Relevant 3rd level qualification would be an advantage.
  • Willingness to work towards a recognised insurance qualification – minimum CIP.
  • Previous experience in the Irish or international insurance market, directly underwriting or assisting in the underwriting and management of risks.
  • Excellent numeracy skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Experience, knowledge, and understanding of the Irish and European insurance industry and how it functions would be an advantage.
  • Some experience in Warranty (personal/consumer lines or affinity business) preferred.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office package skills, proficient in using VLookups and Pivot tables.
  • Ability to work under own initiative.
  • Ability to work with staff at all levels within the Group.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills including the ability to prioritise appropriately and meet deadlines.
