Who We Are

The National Screening Service (NSS) was established by the Minister for Health and Children in January 2007. It was formed in response to a national cancer strategy which advocated for a comprehensive cancer control programme. Today, the NSS is part of the Health Service Executive (HSE). It is a priority for us in the NSS that all eligible people can access our services. The NSS works with many different screening partners to enable this to happen.

Description

About us

The National Screening Service (NSS) delivers four national population-based screening programmes – for cervical, breast and bowel screening and for detecting sight-threatening retinopathy in people with diabetes.

Our programmes focus on looking for early signs of disease in healthy people, so that we can:

  • detect health issues early
  • help prevent disease
  • ensure that anyone who does develop the disease being screened for has the best chance of early, more effective treatment
  • reduce people’s risk of developing a disease or its complications
  • support people in making informed decisions about their health

Our mission: We deliver population screening programmes that help prevent, reduce the risk of, and assist the recognition of, disease in Ireland.

Our vision: To work together to save lives and improve people’s health through population screening.

About the role:

We are accepting applications for a Grade IV Pathology Secretary to join the National Screening Service and BreastCheck Programme on a permanent basis in Dublin. You will provide secretarial and administrative support to the Pathology Department and to the client service function as required.

Responsibilities:

  • The Pathology Secretary will work closely with the Histopathologist and Pathology Department staff.
  • Support the preparation and issuing of Histology / Histopathology Reports and correspondence to the highest possible standard, ensuring efficiency, quality, and accuracy of reports required for the BreastCheck Multi-disciplinary Meeting and surgeries.
  • Ensure the efficient day-to-day administration with proficient understanding of medical terminology in the area of responsibility, including typing dictations and arranging meetings and venues.
  • Collate and organise information on clients, relevant reports, and other documentation for the Consultant Histopathologist and Pathology Department.
  • Ensure that histology results that are authorised are printed in time for MDM.
  • Manage the administration of sundry office items.
  • Perform general administrative duties such as filing, typing, photocopying, scanning, answering/making telephone calls, answering emails, and other administrative tasks as required.
  • Communicate with staff members in the Pathology Department and BreastCheck to ensure efficient and accurate processing of specimens.

Minimum Requirements:

(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:

(i) Have satisfactory experience as a Clerical Officer in the HSE, TUSLA, other statutory health agencies, or a body which provides services on behalf of the HSE under Section 38 of the Health Act 2004.

Or

(ii) Have obtained a pass (Grade D) in at least five subjects from the approved list of subjects in the Department of Education Leaving Certificate Examination, including Mathematics and English or Irish. Candidates should have obtained at least Grade C on higher level papers in three subjects in that examination.

Or

(iii) Have completed a relevant examination at a comparable standard in any equivalent examination in another jurisdiction.

Or

(iv) Hold a comparable and relevant third level qualification of at least level 6 on the National Qualifications Framework maintained by Qualifications and Quality Ireland (QQI).

Join our team and we'll provide you with the support you need to deliver and succeed. This is an unmissable opportunity to join a diverse and supportive workplace where staff feel valued. #ChooseScreening
