Amazon's network is a key differentiator for Amazon Cloud Computing and Web Services (AWS), enabling the global operation of thousands of applications across hundreds of thousands of servers worldwide. The AWS Networking team develops and operates the network platform for all of Amazon including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions. This platform is industry-leading for its efficiency, throughput and reliability, and it is critical to the success of hundreds of thousands of AWS customers. We are looking for a Network Development Manager to join this team in our Amazon Dedicated Cloud space, serving large customers with unique requirements.

As Network Development Manager, you will be hiring, managing and developing a team of network engineers and be responsible for end-to-end operational health of the network; including capacity management and forecast planning, implementation, automation, process management, change control and ensuring continuous improvement. You will represent networking to our customers and to the rest of the Amazon Dedicated Cloud team supporting the customer, ensuring we meet their needs for innovation, delivery and safe operations.

The ideal candidate will have an established background in managing similar teams, with a proven track record in driving operations and continuous improvement of large scale networks for mission critical workloads. You will have a passion for operational excellence and want to identify areas of improvement in our existing frameworks, tools, processes and documentation, striving to make them better. You will have a deep understanding of how to safely implement change, measure and analyse performance, and respond to events to ensure the network always operates as intended.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Operation of the network. Manage, track and report against operations and network status ensuring relevant metrics are collected and reported and driving operational excellence.
  2. Recruiting and hiring. Identify the hiring needs of the team and work with Amazon recruiting to evaluate candidates, participate in phone screens and interviews, and then ensure the new hires onboarding and training.
  3. Performance management and team health. Provide both technical and soft skills mentoring, career and growth management, project management, quality audits, 1:1s, training, day-to-day oversight and coordination of an effective 24x7 operational rotation.
  4. Ensure that design, management, implementation and deployment operations are sound and executed at scale, safely keeping AWS ahead of customers' demand.
  5. Manage network issues and availability risks, ensuring they are addressed swiftly and long-term effective solutions are developed to address the route cause and avoid re-occurrence.
  6. Manage operations and process optimization using relevant data, metrics and dashboarding techniques.
  7. Continuously seek opportunities for growth and improvement and define credible proposals and methods for implementation including contributing to AWS standard planning processes.
  8. Develop, communicate, and maintain project road maps.
  9. Seek opportunities to work with other engineering teams to improve synergies, understanding of best practices and create more opportunities for your engineers.
  10. Own defining and delivering goals for the team, communicating objectives, aligning resources, effective management and reporting of progress and representing status to leadership.
  11. Represent networking to the customer and Amazon Dedicated Cloud service and infrastructure teams, to ensure that network dependencies and deliverables are identified and delivered as needed.
  12. Ensure best practices from AWS are adopted, and compliance with company policies and security requirements.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

* Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or relevant degree/experience
* Experience in a network engineering role and network management role, including managing and developing a team with responsibility for network operations
* Excellent understanding of networking technologies, network management tools and network engineering practices

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Excellent communication abilities, both verbal and written, including long-form business writing on complex topics
* Ability to drive effective teamwork, collaboration and commitment
* Proven ability to not only influence but lead business partners and supporting teams and coordinate between technical teams, peers and business stakeholders
* An entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to drive innovation independently; challenge the status quo and have a passion to seek out improvements at every opportunity
* Excellent analytical problem solving and troubleshooting skills
* A high degree of organizational skill, very detail-oriented.
* Ability to quickly learn and adopt new technologies, in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
* Experience in root cause analysis and error correction, identifying changes to procedures and systems to implement long term fixes and avoid repeating issues
* Experience developing and improving operational documentation, procedures and workflows
* A proven track record of success in delivering complex projects, including coordinating and driving issues to resolution autonomously utilizing excellent project management skills.
* Experience managing on-call support coverage, and participation in escalation and critical issue management.
