Senior Legal Consultant (EU Law and Policy Evaluation)

The Centre for Strategy and Evaluation Services (CSES) is a consultancy founded in 1999 with a reputation for consulting excellence. CSES is a market-leader in the field of evaluation with a long and successful record of carrying out assignments for a wide range of clients. We offer interesting and varied assignments to our Senior Consultants with plenty of scope to take on significant project management and other responsibilities at an early stage. This is an exciting opportunity for somebody wishing to advance their career in public policy consulting.

We are seeking a Senior Legal Consultant with a strong background/interest in EU law and policy and very good qualitative and quantitative research and analytical skills. Assignments will mainly be for the EU institutions, international clients (e.g. UN, World Bank), UK government and other public bodies. Candidates should have or strong project management and delivery skills, experience of contributing to tender development, excellent written English and be able to work flexibly in a demanding consultancy environment. Candidates must be resident in the UK or Ireland for tax purposes but there will be flexibility to work elsewhere for short periods. Some travel is required to London, Brussels and elsewhere, since many studies involve research across Europe.
CSES provides access to a high-quality shared workspace facility in central London. Alternatively, staff can choose to work mainly from home, if not based in London. There is regular interaction between colleagues and a monthly team meeting.

The starting salary is competitive with opportunities for progression dependent on performance. The annual leave allowance is 25 days plus the 8 public holidays. There is a discretionary bonus scheme, dependent on individual performance and the firm's profitability.

Job requirements:

  • At least 5 years' relevant experience.
  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in an appropriate area.
  • Experience in undertaking analysis of EU law and policies.
  • Professional background in at least one of these policy areas: justice and home affairs; single market; industrial policy; competition; consumer policy; employment and social affairs.
  • Able to work flexibly and meet tight deadlines.
  • Numerate, ideally with at least basic statistical skills and competent knowledge of Excel.
  • Good inter-personal, communication, presentational and client liaison skills.
  • Able to draft reports to a high standard with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Ideally with a good knowledge of one or more other European languages.
  • Resident in the UK or Ireland for tax purposes
  • Willingness to travel across Europe (e.g. occasional 1-2 day trips for client meetings or fieldwork).
