Job Purpose:

Audience Editors play a pivotal role in our digital presence by amplifying Irish Times journalism on all our digital platforms. This dynamic role involves managing social media channels, search engine optimization, homepage curation, newsletters, push notifications, and long-term projects. Adaptability and creative thinking are key in this role that revolves around digital innovation, sharp editorial judgment, and flair.

Core responsibilities

  • Promotion and management of our journalism: Oversee the dissemination of our journalism on digital platforms, encompassing social media promotion, homepage curation, headline optimization, editorial SEO, to broaden the reach of our content and expand our subscriber base. Keeping abreast of changes in search and social platforms and devising responsive strategies are fundamental.
  • Multimedia enhancement: Elevate and spotlight our digital content through strategic placement, promotion, and incorporation of multimedia elements like links, graphics, picture galleries, and audio/video content.
  • Digital platform oversight: Support senior team members in managing The Irish Times digital platforms and collaborate with all editorial departments on breaking news coverage and strategic initiatives. This includes tasks ranging from crafting news alert text to selecting lead stories for the homepage.
  • Reader engagement: Aid in distributing reader products, such as compiling and dispatching digests, email newsletters, and push notifications.
  • Social media strategy implementation: Actively contribute to shaping and executing our social media strategy, with a special emphasis on enhancing social video content and engaging diverse audiences.
  • Additional duties: Fulfill other relevant responsibilities as directed by the Head of Audience or Deputy Head of Audience.
  • Communication and technology: Demonstrate outstanding communication skills, flexibility, and adeptness with cutting-edge technologies as part of a versatile team.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Editorial and Digital Skills: Demonstrable sharp editorial judgment with a solid background in digital journalism (minimum three years) is a must. Proficiency in one or more areas like social media management, editorial SEO, video editing, data analysis, data journalism, or graphic design would be advantageous.
  • Social media proficiency: Strong skills in editing and curating visual and video content for video-centric social channels, paired with extensive experience across various social media platforms.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively: Capacity to work autonomously and within a fast-paced team setup is vital. Evidence of exceptional organizational capabilities, creativity, and the knack to perform effectively under pressure and tight timelines is crucial.
  • Interpersonal skills: Excellent interpersonal and teamwork abilities are paramount to foster collaboration across different departments and with external associates to meet deadlines and objectives.
