External lecturer for Master Program Urbanism and Societal Change

The Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation invites applications for a permanent position as external lecturer with a particular focus on intersection of architecture, urban design and urban planning.

The vacant position is affiliated with Institute of Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape (IBBL). We hope to fill the position by August 1st, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Institute of Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape (IBBL, Institut for Bygningskunst, By og Landskab)

The institute's disciplinary fields are the spatial change and development of buildings, cities and landscapes, historically and in the present. We understand architecture as an integral part of societal development, and we are committed to contributing to a better quality of life for the majority, as well as to the essential paradigm shift called for by the green transition. Our teaching, research and artistic research focus on the development of knowledge and methods in these fields and the production of substantive plans, proposals and strategies for sustainable and experience-rich cities and landscapes, housing areas and buildings. Typical starting points for research and development projects are urban and landscape development both in relation to the climate and biodiversity crises and to demographic and social change; architecture for well-being such as housing, urban spaces and architecture for health, education and culture in strategic and architectural perspectives. An additional focus is digital and analogue representation and didactics in our fields.

The institute's teaching comprises one bachelor's programme, two master's programmes at Campus Holmen, and one bachelor's programme and from 2026 also two master's programmes at Campus Kalundborg. The institute currently also comprises the Joint Interdisciplinary Course in Urban Planning. The Institute also contributes to interdisciplinary teaching at the Royal Danish Academy.

The position of external lecturer will consist of lecturing and independent teaching within the subject area of Urbanism and Societal Change.

Your duties will also include:

  • planning and correcting assignments – both as part of ongoing teaching and in connection with examinations
  • examining students at examinations and other tests
  • supervising students.

You may be required to undertake other duties to a limited extent and to take part in teachers' meetings and study trips as specifically agreed.

Qualifications

You hold a master's level degree in architecture, preferably with specialisation in urban design and urban planning.

We also expect that you:

  • have several years' teaching experience at master's level, preferably within the position's subject area. A portfolio of teaching projects in the related area will be an advantage.
  • have experience in curriculum planning.
  • local and international experience, insight and knowledge in the fields of urban design, urban strategy and urban planning – both in relation to the position's subject area and architecture, urban design and urban planning generally.
  • has specialist knowledge and a strong professional profile within the practice of architecture, urban design, urban strategy and urban planning which related to the subject areas of the programme. A portfolio of practice-based urban projects will be an advantage.

In the overall assessment for appointment to this position, particular importance will be attached to an excellent track record in innovative teaching.

What we offer

We offer a creative, dedicated, stimulating and visionary educational and research environment. We value good collegial relationships conducive to mutual inspiration and discourse.

Salary and terms of employment

The terms of pay and employment will be in accordance with the current circular regarding part-time lecturers and teaching assistants at universities, etc., under the Ministry of Higher Education and Research in force between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

The position will also be filled in accordance with the applicable job structure for artistic and scientific staff at the Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation; Aarhus School of Architecture and Design School Kolding – Executive Order No. 1190 of 21 August 2023.

The position is a part-time position. The number of hours will be minimum 100 hours per year. In the 2024/2025 academic year the hours amount to approx. 174 hours. The number of hours for the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic years is not yet known but will amount to a maximum of 500 hours annually, to be agreed before the start of the semesters. You should submit your application with attachments online via the "Apply for position" button, to reach the Royal Danish Academy no later than April 7, 2024.

Applications and application documents received after the application deadline will not be considered.

Please note that the position is being advertised and will be filled in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science's "Executive Order of 12 April 2019 on the employment of artistic and scientific staff at the higher artistic educational institutions within the remit of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science".
