Job Title and Grade Staff Nurse - Intellectual Disability Services Reporting Relationship Reports to the Unit Manager/Senior Nurse in Charge. Purpose of the Post The primary aim of this role is to provide comprehensive support within the health and social care framework, addressing the practical, physical, and emotional needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The role focuses on enabling service users in residential, training, and day service settings to achieve their highest level of independence or improve skills that promote self-sufficiency. Central to this position is fostering the personal development, quality of life, and abilities of service users with respect and value. The staff nurse also assumes responsibility for supervising other staff under their direction and taking a leadership role while on duty. Essential Qualifications and Experience Applicants must meet the following criteria as of the application deadline: Registered in the Intellectual Disability/Mental Health Division of the Live Register of Nurses maintained by An Bord Altranais (NMBI), or eligible for registration. Experience working in residential or day service settings with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Scope of Practice: Demonstrates professional competence and adheres to ethical and legislative standards. Commits to ongoing professional development to enhance knowledge and expertise. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Under the guidance of the Unit Manager/designated supervisor, the staff nurse will: Person-Centred Planning Support service users in identifying and achieving personal goals through individualized care plans. Assist with educational pursuits, such as FETAC qualifications, as appropriate. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, families, and other stakeholders to implement care plans. Act as a key worker for assigned service users, designing and coordinating tailored care programs. Community Participation Facilitate service users' active involvement in their community, including participation in trips outside normal working hours. Individualized Support Provide tailored support, ensuring service users' dignity and respect. Assist with personal care, nutrition, and community living skills to enhance independence. Maintain cleanliness, comfort, and hygiene standards for service users. Communication Interact professionally with families, visitors, and other professionals. Communicate respectfully with service users, adapting to their abilities. Accurately document and share relevant information with stakeholders. Health Management Monitor service users' health and address concerns through appropriate channels. Manage medication administration in compliance with policies and regulations. Maintain updated knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, and standards. Staff Management Supervise assigned staff, monitor workloads, and assess performance. Address training needs, disciplinary matters, and grievances as required. Participate in performance appraisals and staff development activities. Household Management Ensure efficient use of supplies, equipment, and utilities. Maintain stock levels and manage resources effectively. Health and Safety Report building faults and risks promptly. Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, including medication policies. Undertake mandatory training and follow infection control practices. Record and Financial Management Maintain accurate records of care plans, finances, and other documentation. Support service users in managing personal finances, ensuring transparency. Training and Professional Development Commit to ongoing professional growth, including An Bord Altranais requirements. Attend relevant training, conferences, and staff meetings.
