This is a permanent full-time role, 35 hours per week.
Job Summary: Senior Medical Scientist in the Biochemistry Department including responsibility for Point of Care/Near Patient Testing activities.
To manage all Point of Care (POC) testing within the hospital, ensuring the achievement of agreed targets and standards.
Principle Duties/Responsibilities: In co-operation with the relevant Consultant Pathologist, Chief Medical Scientist and Laboratory Manager, the post holder is expected to: Manage the activities of the Point of Care function in the Galway Clinic laboratories and clinical areas.
Develop and maintain a collaborative approach to service delivery.
In consultation with Chief Medical Scientists in Haematology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Quality Manager, Laboratory Consultants and Members of the hospital POC committee, lead the development, implementation and review of Point of Care testing in the Galway Clinic to ensure that all regulatory requirements are met and best practice achieved.
To be responsible for all POC standard operational procedures (SOPs) Management of the POC database.
Coordinate the connection of POCT devices to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), including understanding and application of POCT middle systems, device configuration for IT connectivity, and coordination of all relevant IT stakeholders.
Ongoing review and management of IQC processes for all POC.
Management, distribution and analysis of POC EQA programmes.
Induction & supervision of scientific and clinical staff in POC activity.
Co-ordination of ongoing training & competency assessment programmes for all POC operators Setting up and maintaining a POC Asset Register.
Management & review of POC non-conforming events, product recalls, customer complaints.
Procurement, validation/verification & maintenance of POC equipment.
Ongoing inventory management of POC kits, equipment and consumables Overseeing POC connectivity to Hospital and Laboratory IT systems.
To be a lead member of the POC Committee To drive innovation in POC Monitor performance of external quality assurance, calibration of equipment, internal quality control, training and competency, activity figures, etc.
Leading the team of scientists involved in the day-to-day management of POC in vitro medical devices.
Dealing with Clinical Incidents, HRPA alerts, complaints and non-conformances and ensuring the appropriate corrective actions are put in place.
To perform any other functions that may be assigned by the Laboratory Manager from time to time.
Participate in POC training for staff as required.
Participate if required in the Laboratory on call rota.
Be responsible for the quality of their work and duties in accordance with Hospital policy.
Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or Hospital information.
To demonstrate flexibility, by accommodating other areas of the Laboratory should the need arise.
From time to time, to undertake any reasonable and practicable medical scientist duties a requested by the Laboratory Manager.
Candidate Essential requirements Relevant Scientific Qualification (BSc in Biomedical or related Science) Four years experience in a Medical Laboratory since qualifying as a Medical Scientist.
Must be a member or be eligible for membership of the ACSLM Must be registered with CORU.
Desirable Cross discipline experience in the following areas: Microbiology, Biochemistry and Haematology, Point of Care Testing.
Knowledge and experience of working in an ISO accredited Medical Laboratory.
Experience of working with a Laboratory Information System.
You will be required to contribute to your own professional development within the Hospital and to maintain an up-to-date personal training/re-training record in accordance with the Laboratory policy and CORU requirements.
