Overview

Archivist role at South Dublin County Council. Temporary three-year contract with potential for blended working arrangements where applicable.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a County Archives Plan informed by public and stakeholder consultation, emphasizing information gathering, awareness-raising, and best practices for identifying, protecting, and ensuring access to archives.
  • Establish and implement County Council archive responsibilities, including preparing a work plan to support the County Archives Plan.
  • Provide an annual report on work to the Heritage Council and the Director of Services within SDCC.
  • Prepare, manage, and implement a County Archives Development Plan that includes auditing current local authority archival material, identifying relevant collections, and assessing existing archival service provision.
  • Collaborate with relevant Council departments and advisory teams to develop and deliver the archives service; contribute to the Heritage Team and promote heritage across the County.
  • Ensure archive services adhere to professional standards for curation, security, and data protection; develop and maintain necessary policies and documentation.
  • Maintain service metrics and ensure compliance with legal requirements; provide service analysis and reports as required.
  • Submit quarterly reports and an annual report; liaise with stakeholders to ensure alignment and progress.
  • Provide expert advisory support to the Council on archives-related matters, including statutory obligations.
  • Apply for and deliver projects funded by the Heritage Council and other sources.
  • Manage performance and service delivery to meet targets, plans, and policies; participate in the County Heritage Forum.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of frontline archive services (when operational), including handling collections, premises maintenance, disaster planning, and collection transfers.
  • Assess and prioritise conservation and digitisation of archives; plan community engagement, exhibitions, events, and activities to promote public engagement with archival holdings and local heritage.
  • Undertake additional duties of a similar nature as required and may be assigned to work across appropriate areas.
Qualifications
  • Essential: Recognised qualification in Archival Studies; relevant experience in archival work.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks governing archives; strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills; ability to work with internal departments and external agencies; familiarity with digital technologies in public services; budgeting and financial accountability understanding; awareness of health and safety regulations; self-motivation and ability to work independently as well as in a team.
