The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Responsibilities
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under general direction of a qualified physician, the vascular sonographer will perform a variety of technical procedures that involves the application of high frequency ultrasound waves to patients for diagnostic purpose, will exercise a high degree of precision, skill, and judgment, and will demonstrate sound knowledge of vascular anatomy, and physiology, Doppler physics/instrumentation, ultrasound physics and instrumentation. The sonographer is expected to have or pursue the appropriate certifications in vascular technology.
Essential Functions
- Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic vascular sonography, Doppler, and plesmythography examinations including carotid ultrasound, lower extremity venous and arterial exams (including non-invasive segmental blood pressure recordings), upper extremity arterial and venous exams, renal artery exams as well as visceral exams and aortic Doppler and endovascular procedure follow-up exams.
- Prepares patients for exams and explains procedures to be performed. Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer's care.
- Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
- Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
- Analyses sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician and/or referring physicians. Generates preliminary vascular reports and relay final reports of vascular studies to appropriate medical staff and physicians.
- Records studies on videotape or other image acquisition for review and permanent storage of patient exam. Able to input exam findings into the department database for interpretation.
- Educational responsibilities include keeping current with new developments in diagnostic vascular ultrasound, maintaining CMEs per credentialing, as well as assisting with instruction of students, in-service education of medical staff and vascular fellows.
- Assists with the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory. Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area and maintains adequate supplies. Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography required.
- Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Vascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required.
- Active certification as Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) required within 12 months of hire.
