Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director with responsibility for inpatients only (Sole Medical Practitioner of a 7-Bed Specialist Eating Disorder Treatment Centre)

Reporting To:

Proprietor/CEO (Operational management via the Director of Services)

Job Type:

Independent Contractor Role/Fee-for Service Arrangement, required for 8-12 hours/week onsite, and 24/7 on call service.

Overview of the Service:

This is the smallest approved centre in Ireland, offering person-centred inpatient treatment for individuals ages 18+ with eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and ARFID. The centre supports voluntary treatment only, and does not admit patients involuntary under the mental health act 2001.

Role Summary:

The Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director will be the lead medical and clinical governance figure within the centre. As the sole on-site doctor, the post-holder will be responsible for psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning, risk management, and overall clinical oversight of patient care. In their capacity as Clinical Director, they will also oversee clinical governance structures, ensure compliance with Mental Health Commission standards, and contribute to service development, staff training, and policy formation

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties (Consultant Psychiatrist Role):

• Act as the responsible Consultant for patients admitted to the residential eating disorder programme

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments and diagnostic formulations for all patients on admission.

• Develop and oversee individualized treatment plans, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.

• Provide weekly or more frequent medical reviews of inpatients as clinically indicated.

• Manage psychiatric comorbidities such as mood disorders, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD.

• Lead on physical health monitoring in collaboration with GPs and dietitians

• Provide psychoeducation to patients and families regarding psychiatric diagnoses and treatment plans.

• Support safe discharge planning and continuity of care, liaising with community mental health teams and primary care providers.

• Provide a 24/7 on call service for clinical emergencies

Working Hours:

Flexibility available regarding day(s)/timing of on-site duties. On-call requirements are limited and negotiable (e.g. telephonic/remote backup support, retained arrangement with a local GP for medical issues).
