Overview of role:
The position of Senior Radiographer requires an ability to lead, guide and supervise radiographers and assistants on a day to day basis. The role holder must have an ability to manage in a rapidly changing environment and a willingness to undertake such additional duties as may be assigned from time to time. While carrying out the duties appropriate to a Senior Radiographer, including the provision of flexibility in hours of service as required, you must also provide leadership in the delivery of specialized services. The role is rotational across modalities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Radiographer will be expected to take responsibility for patients on whom they will carry out diagnostic radiography or imaging procedures. In addition, the employee is expected to practice within the policies and procedures set out by the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic.
The employee will be required to possess a clear understanding and commitment to the ethos and philosophy of the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic.
General Accountability:
- Maintain, throughout the Clinic, an awareness of the primacy of patient in relation to all clinical activities and maintain a high standard of Radiography care.
- Maintain confidentiality in aspects of patient care.
- Create and promote healthy working relationships within the hospital.
- Demonstrate behavior consistent with the values of the Clinic.
- Ensure that each patient is treated as an individual and that privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
- Actively participate in the Clinic's accreditation program and the ethos of Continuous Quality Improvement.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Undertake, as a leader, responsibility on a day to day basis for the Imaging service and the effective utilization of all resources allocated.
- Ensure that Radiation Protection Rules and MRI Safety Rules are applied at all times and to be familiar with, and follow, the Ionizing Radiation Regulations and best practice guidelines relating to MRI safety.
- Be familiar with and abide by the Patient's Charter and treat every patient as an individual in terms of courtesy, kindness, efficiency and confidentiality.
- Keep informed of all relevant policies including all Health and Safety Policies to ensure maintenance of a safe working environment.
- Participate in the development and implementation of operational policies, protocols and guidelines to ensure optimum utilization of resources.
- Work in co-operation with and communicate effectively with other team members and referrers.
- Participate in evening and weekend work as required by the service.
- Actively participate in the development, execution and follow up of audits within the department.
- Support the education and development of junior members of the radiographic team as well as Radiography students.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Be accountable for the quality of the service provided, including customer service and technical aspects.
- Take part in routine daily inspection of equipment and quality assurance procedures.
- Deal with incidents and accidents in accordance with the Clinic policy and accurately document these events and follow reporting guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment service, maintenance, malfunction, downtime and performance as required and co-ordinate preventative maintenance schedules in accordance with clinical demand.
- Attend meetings and sit on committees as required.
- Carry out such duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned by the Radiography Services Manager or Clinic Management.
- Promote and maintain a high level of staff morale, promoting team relations and job satisfaction among Radiographers.
- Promote and maintain a safe environment for staff and patients. Assist in the development and implementation of risk management and health and safety strategies in co-ordination with relevant colleagues within the department and throughout the Clinic.
- Contribute to reviews, evaluations and development of the radiology service.
Education and Teaching Responsibilities:
- Maintain up to date knowledge of clinical, technical and radiographic developments. Ensure that best practices are implemented and maintained.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of operational policies, protocols and guidelines to ensure optimum utilisation of resources.
- Develop and maintain a training function as may be required in relation to qualified staff and trainees. Supervise and assess all training as required.
- Liaise with the RSM and other senior staff on the rotation of staff through the Department to ensure an adequate number of trained staff are available.
- Take part in in-service training as required.
- Promote good relationships with other key members of the Clinic staff through positive attitudes which convey an understanding and awareness of the wider function of the Clinic.
- Ensure that all Clinic policies and relevant legislation on radiation safety and MRI is understood by staff and complied with.
- Implement and maintain a quality assurance program for the Department.
Qualifications & Experience:
Each candidate must possess the Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Radiography or the Diploma of the College of Radiographers; or
Possess a qualification at least equivalent to the above as validated by CORU and hold CORU registration and maintain this for the duration of their employment in UPMC SSC.
Experience & Competencies
A minimum of 3 years post qualification experience in Radiography.
Previous training and competence in MRI and CT (minimum 12 months).
Excellent interpersonal skills along with excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
High standards of clinical knowledge and evidence based best practice.
Excellent computer skills.
Ability to work on own initiative, priorities and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Ability to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.
Be free from any defect or disease which would render the employee unsuitable for the role and be in an excellent state of health provide a continuous and efficient service to all our patients.
