About the Company:

Our client is a well-established and profitable business with 120 staff across multiple departments including operations, finance, sales, estimating, and contract management. With a strong client base and a reputation for quality, the business is poised for further growth. The owner is now seeking to appoint a Managing Director to take full responsibility for the day-to-day running of the business and to lead the organisation into its next phase of development.

Role Overview:

The Managing Director will take full operational and strategic control of the company, implementing robust systems, processes, and reporting structures that drive efficiency, support sustainable growth, and reduce dependency on the owner. Working closely with the existing senior leadership team, the MD will lead cultural and operational change, ensuring every department is aligned and accountable for delivering on the company's objectives.

This is a pivotal role that requires a strong, decisive leader with experience in managing complex, multi-departmental businesses and driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take full responsibility for the day-to-day operational and strategic management of the company.
  • Design and implement systems, processes, and reporting structures that ensure effective cross-departmental communication and accountability.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across all areas of the business, identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
  • Lead and support the senior leadership team in delivering operational excellence and aligning all departments with strategic goals.
  • Oversee and refine financial management processes to ensure accurate reporting, forecasting, and cost control.
  • Strengthen existing client relationships and support business development strategies to sustain and grow market share.
  • Implement change management strategies to evolve the company culture towards increased accountability and independence while respecting existing staff tenure and experience.
  • Ensure operational compliance with industry regulations, quality standards, and safety requirements.
  • Report directly to the owner with regular updates on business performance, strategic initiatives, and key metrics.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven track record in a senior leadership role such as Managing Director, General Manager, or Operations Director within a multi-departmental business.
  • Strong background in implementing systems, processes, and reporting structures across multiple business functions.
  • Experience in change management and cultural transformation, particularly within established teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large teams and foster accountability at all levels of the organisation.
  • Exposure to construction, engineering, manufacturing, or a related sector is advantageous.
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to interpret financial and operational data to inform decision-making.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • A pragmatic, hands-on leader who understands "what good looks like" and can build sustainable frameworks for long-term success.
