Role

The Payments - Treasury team at Whatnot is responsible for how our business moves and records money and credit in all customer transactions, including handling taxes, customs, returns, refunds, and more, regardless of customer location. We are deeply connected to our business foundations and have unlocked tremendous growth within and across international territories, creating new ways for our users to interact and transact on the platform. You'll collaborate closely with our partner team, Payments - Experience, and other teams and senior leaders across Whatnot.

We aim to make substantial improvements to our payment infrastructure, focusing on scale, reliability, diversity of payment options, fraud mitigation, transaction modeling, and tax processes to enhance our international marketplace.

Each team member has specific responsibilities and is trusted to advance aspects of the domain as an expert in collaboration with leadership. Good judgment, effective communication, and the ability to make trade-offs are essential.

As our next Staff Software Engineer, you should have 8+ years of experience building scalable systems used by millions, plus:

  • Excellent product instincts, prioritizing user experience and long-term objectives.
  • Experience designing complex distributed systems.
  • Ability to define technical roadmaps, identify improvement areas, and lead solutions.
  • Skill in architecting systems to improve business outcomes.
  • Understanding trade-offs in technical decisions.
  • Facilitating cross-team collaboration and delegating ownership.
  • Mentoring others and promoting inclusive teams.
  • Strong ownership of projects from start to finish.
  • Proven track record of shipping high-quality features iteratively.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and initiative.
  • Willingness to do frontend work when needed.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies.
  • Experience with payment systems and international commerce (preferred).
  • Startup experience at a high-growth company (preferred).
  • Knowledge of programming languages like Python, Elixir, JavaScript (preferred).
