Staff Frontend Engineer

Overview

Toast is building a restaurant platform that helps restaurants adapt and grow. We are transforming how restaurants operate and how frontend development is done across the Toast Platform Team (PLEX). We own the component library, tooling, build systems, frontend CLI and guide the microfrontend architecture that supports hundreds of SPAs across the company.

This is a high-impact, cross-functional role for an individual who excels at the intersection of design, engineering, and product development. You will work closely with design system leaders, product engineers, and platform teams to build systems that unlock frontend velocity and consistency.

What We're Looking For

Staff Frontend Engineer with a passion for UI craft, scalable systems, and design systems. This role will guide the technical direction of Buffet, Toast's cross-platform component library – a foundation for Toast's user experience across products. You'll be central to building accessible, performant, international-ready interfaces at scale and defining how component libraries evolve in a world of AI-assisted development.

This is a cross-functional, high-impact role focused on the frontend ecosystem and design systems at Toast.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical strategy and architecture for Buffet, Toast's design component library and underlying systems
• Champion accessibility, performance, and internationalization across frontend surfaces
• Evolve Buffet to meet the needs of AI-assisted development, enabling safe and scalable component generation and usage
• Partner with Design, Product, and Engineering to align system capabilities with team needs and product strategy
• Build and document scalable patterns, tooling, and abstractions to support experimentation and high-quality delivery
• Influence cross-team efforts around theming, responsive design, content surfaces, and shared UI frameworks
• Mentor and contribute to the frontend community at Toast
• Leverage AI tools to enhance development workflow, improve velocity, and pioneer new approaches

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience building and scaling web applications, with deep expertise in modern frontend technologies (React, TypeScript, CSS-in-JS, etc.)
• Experience building or maintaining component libraries or design systems
• Passion for frontend fundamentals – accessibility, animation, responsive design, and cross-browser behavior
• Strong systems thinking – anticipate scaling challenges, promote reusability, and design for change
• Interest in AI-assisted coding, tooling, and emerging patterns
• Familiarity with analytics tooling (Amplitude, GA, etc.) and A/B testing platforms
• Experience influencing product and design decisions through code and collaboration
• Collaborative mindset and commitment to frontend craft
