About

Peter McVerry Trust is a national housing and homeless charity committed to reducing homelessness and the harm caused by substance misuse and social disadvantage.

The charity provides low-threshold entry services, primarily to younger people and vulnerable adults with complex needs, and offers pathways out of homelessness based on the principles of the Housing First model.

Peter McVerry Trust's national headquarters are located in Dublin. The charity currently has a mid-west regional office in Limerick City, a north-east regional office in Drogheda, Co Louth, and a southern regional office in Cork City.

In 2024, the charityworked with just under 13,000 people (10,402 adults and 2,594 children)and was active in23 local authoritiesacross Ireland.

The Role:

Peter McVerry Trust is seeking a Chairperson to lead the board of trustees through a pivotal transitional period. This crucial role encompasses guiding the board in overseeing the organisation's strategic direction, governance, and overall performance. The Chairperson will be responsible for ensuring that the board operates effectively and that the executive team is held accountable for achieving the charity's strategic objectives.

The ideal candidate will be a strong facilitator, a decisive, empathetic, and accountable leader, and possess the skills and expertise to steer the organisation effectively through this crucial phase. Peter McVerry Trust encourages applications from individuals with extensive experience in leadership and governance who are also passionate about the charity's values and work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the organisation's integrity.
  • Advocate for and communicate the charity's vision, mission and values.
  • Provide leadership to the board.
  • Promote exemplary governance among trustees.
  • Facilitate effective board meetings.
  • Emphasise transparency and accountability.
  • Provide continuous support to and oversight of the CEO.
  • Collaborate to achieve organisational objectives.
  • Serve as a figurehead and spokesperson when necessary.
  • Engage with stakeholders on behalf of the charity when necessary.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Commitment to Vision, Mission and Values: Upholds the organisation's vision, mission and values with dedication.
  • Previous Chair experience: The successful candidate will have experience of successfully chairing a board of an organisation similar in size and/or complexity to Peter McVerry Trust.
  • Leadership and Strategic Vision: Provides clear direction and effective leadership to drive success.
  • Governance and Compliance Expertise: Ensures adherence to regulations and best governance practices.
  • Financial Oversight: Manages financial operations with responsibility and strategic insight.
  • Communication Skills: Conveys information clearly and fosters effective dialogue
  • Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement: Promotes organisational goals and engages with stakeholders.
  • Team Building: Develops high-performance teams and promotes collaboration.
  • Empathy and Sensitivity: Responds to others' needs with compassion and consideration
  • Decision-Making and Follow-Up: Makes timely decisions and ensures thorough follow-up.
  • Media: Experience of engaging with national media.
  • Political Acumen: Experience of engaging with politicians, departments, and Oireachtas committees.

Charities Regulator's General Duties of a Charity Trustee:

  • Comply with the charity's governing document.
  • Ensure the charity is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit.
  • Act in the best interest of the charity.
  • Act with reasonable care and skill.
  • Manage the assets of the charity.

Board Meetings:

A board and committee meeting schedule is provided annually with adequate notice for those attending.

There are six board meetings a year. In addition, there are six scheduled Chairperson and CEO meetings a year.

All board meetings are held in person in the PMVT Head Office in Dublin, with an option to join online.

There are currently four committees of the board, with an option to review the structure once the new Chairperson is in place:
