About the role

An exciting opportunity exists for a Research Manager (Grade 7) to join the LGMA Research Unit, which comprises a Head of Research, two Research Managers, and a Research Officer. The Research Manager will be a key member of the research team and will report directly to the Head of Research.

This is a middle management supervisory position responsible for the efficient management, direction, and deployment of resources for the Research Unit. The role includes supervising research staff and commissioned researchers, managing daily operations, and ensuring the delivery of a varied research program involving engagement with internal colleagues and external stakeholders such as local authority staff, government officials, and academics.

The successful candidate will set up and manage Data Working Groups (DWGs) across key policy areas, which analyze administrative data to generate evidence for the sector. They will collaborate with the LGMA Central Data Unit and may engage with NOAC on sectoral performance indicators and customer service topics.

The role requires a fast-paced, structured environment with strict deadlines. The candidate should be an effective communicator, skilled in data presentation and stakeholder engagement, detail-oriented, and committed to quality assurance and documentation of processes and decisions.

The Research Manager will contribute to policy development and strategy implementation, support ongoing research on local government policy and practice, and produce high-quality reports and policy advice. Responsibilities include managing Data Working Groups, overseeing data collection for national performance indicators, engaging with NOAC and policy committees, and promoting dissemination of research findings. The role also involves representing the LGMA on national committees, supporting research collaborations, and fostering academic and institutional linkages.
