The post-holder will develop and deliver a specialist physiotherapy service, providing high quality, safe and timely care with an emphasis on access, choice, communication, cultural diversity and patient participation for mothers who have recently given birth in The Rotunda Hospital, ensuring the highest standards of care will be provided in line with best practice.
This National Women's and Infant Health Programme funded post will be to set up the physiotherapy component of the North Dublin Postnatal hub and to monitor and develop the service. The job will cover patients seen in the hub (venue to be confirmed) up to three days per week initially and in the Rotunda Hospital. The postnatal hub will also provide access for mothers delivered in the other Dublin maternity services and provide a multidisciplinary team service.
Clinical Practice- To provide an expert clinical service to the Women's Health and Continence service.
- To ensure a high standard of physiotherapy assessment, treatment and management is provided for patients and that professional standards are adhered to.
- Ensure the privacy and dignity of the patient is respected at all times.
- Observe patient confidentiality.
- To undertake other duties within the hospital as specified by the Physiotherapy Manager, including maintaining ward competency level.
- To put in place evaluating mechanisms by continually auditing and evaluating the service to maximise effectiveness, efficiency and quality.
- Lead, promote and ensure clinical electiveness through performance management, education, audit and research.
- Collect and analyse data to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and upholding standards of care through clinical audit and research.
- Keep abreast of research and practice developments in relevant clinical areas by attending seminars, conferences and post graduate courses.
- Promote changes in work practices, procedures, techniques or technology having regard to the development of best practice and advanced practice in physiotherapy.
- Communicate with other clinical specialists throughout the country and internationally to further develop clinical excellence and research.
- Act as a resource to other physiotherapist/colleagues regarding the management of complex cases both within the hospital and at a regional/national level.
- Contribute to a structured process for education of colleagues, undergraduates and other disciplines in the specialist area.
- Contribute towards continuing professional development activity programmes within the department.
- Serve on or advise such committees that may be set up relevant to this clinical specialty.
- Contribute to the forward planning and development of Post Natal hubs Clinical Pathways.
- To be aware of resource management and contribute to business planning and continuous quality improvement related to the physiotherapy department and the specialist area.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate patient and activity records in line with national documentation standards
- Adhere to clinic standards of practice and protocols for written communication with GP's and referral sources.
- Compile and prepare reports of a legal nature where necessary, based on the documented physiotherapeutic care of the patient.
- Responsible for daily administrative tasks and overall caseload management for physiotherapy services.
- Optimise the use of available resources and demonstrate innovation to sustain and enhance services.
- Provide information on activity levels and statistics as may be required by the Physiotherapist Manager.
- Comply with department policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.
- Establish key working relationships and facilitate regular service and clinical meetings.
- Comply with all mandatory training and national standards.
- Undertake other responsibilities as agreed from time to time with the Physiotherapist Manager or other such persons to who he/she may be accountable to.
- To work with the Physiotherapy Manager, MDT and NWIHP to set up the North Dublin Postnatal Hub.
- To work with Obstetrics Consultants and relevant health care professionals in triage of physiotherapy referrals to manage the waiting list and improve the patient pathway to the postnatal hub.
- To link with clinics with the relevant Consultant or Specialist Registrar such as perineal clinic, complex pelvic floor clinic, mental health trauma clinic, postnatal midwifery service.
- To provide the physiotherapy advanced assessment, management and treatment of patients referred from the obstetric/Women's health service.
- To provide advance practice in the management of self-management pessary fitting and review according to relevant guidelines and under the governance of the Obstetric teams.
- To work within the multidisciplinary team ethos and liaise with staff to ensure effective communication at all times, particularly with the Gynaecological clinical specialist for joint quality improvement projects/ clinical audit and staff training.
- Promote and ensure clinical effectiveness, a high standard of care following evidence-based guidelines.
- To evaluate and develop the clinical specialist role through clinical audit and research.
- To return KPI's and patient statistics to NWIHP on a monthly basis.
- Provide expert clinical lead for Women\'s Health and Continence senior/physiotherapy colleagues.
- Essential: Hold a Physiotherapy qualification recognised by the Physiotherapists Registration Board and be registered on the physiotherapy register maintained by CORU (proof required).
- Desirable: Ability to use data management and statistical analysis software; Experience delivering services via virtual and telehealth systems; Active participation in professional bodies and working groups relevant to this post.
- Essential requirements: The requisite clinical skills, knowledge and ability, including a high standard of suitability and professional ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the office. Confident, self-motivated, reliable, flexible, able to work in a team and independently with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to apply behaviour change and motivational interview skills. Experience in audit, evaluation, research, quality improvement and dissemination of results. Patient-centred ethos and ability to plan, review and adapt the service. Strong leadership and CPD commitment.
