The purpose of the post is Management of an eighteen bedded Medical Ward. Qualifications and Requirements NMBI Registration Registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses (Nursing & Midwifery Board Ireland). Experience Minimum of five years post-registration nursing experience (full-time or equivalent hours part-time) in an acute hospital. At least two years of management experience. Education Nursing management qualification or willingness to undertake one within two years of appointment. Skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Leadership, management and organisational skills. Proficiency in computer applications. Key Responsibilities: Clinical Leadership & Management: Lead the ward/unit activities to ensure high standards of holistic patient care, adhering to best practice. Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring their wishes are respected and promoting patient-centered care. Coordinate bed/clinic management with the Consultants, Bed Allocation Manager, and Nursing Administration. Ensure compliance with hospital policies regarding medication administration and patient safety. Ensure that incidents, accidents, and near-misses are reported, and implement quality improvements as required. Liaise with the infection control team to ensure the ward/unit maintains high hygiene standards. People Management: Roster and allocate staff based on clinical needs and available resources, ensuring an adequate skill mix. Supervise and support the development of the ward team, including involvement in direct care when needed. Communicate clearly with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team, maintaining patient confidentiality. Manage complaints and disciplinary issues in line with hospital policies, implementing quality improvements when appropriate. Monitor and manage staff performance, turnover, and leave. Oversee orientation and development programs for new staff members, ensuring mandatory training is up to date. Quality Assurance & Audit: Ensure compliance with hospital policies, professional guidelines, and relevant legislation. Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based guidelines, protocols, and procedures for the ward/unit. Participate in clinical audits and act on findings to improve patient care delivery. Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Nursing and multidisciplinary teams in quality improvement programs and hospital accreditation processes. Maintain up-to-date knowledge in nursing research and contribute to educational programs, both locally and nationally. Additional Responsibilities: All staff must adhere to hospital hygiene and infection control policies. As CNM2, you will ensure compliance with hand hygiene, infection prevention measures, and hygiene protocols across the unit. Mandated Person Children First Act 2015 As a mandated person under the Children First Act 2015 you have A LEGAL obligation: Report child protection concerns at or above a defined threshold to TUSLA Assist TUSLA, if requested, in assessing a concern which has been the subject of a mandated report Complete the HSE e-learning programme An Introduction to Children First Complete the HSE e- learning training for Mandated Persons (CHO6) You will remain a mandated person for the duration of your appointment to your current post or for the duration of your appointment to such other post as is included in the categories specified in the legislation Mandated Person Children First Act 2015 Confidentiality: You will have access to confidential patient and hospital information. It is essential to handle this information with discretion and in accordance with hospital policies. Conditions of Employment: Annual Leave: 2528 days per annum (pro-rata). Annual leave is calculated January to December of each year. Sick Leave: Refer to the hospital's sick leave policy (HSE HR Circular 020/2012). Notice Period: Minimum of three months written notice of termination required. Uniform Policy: Must adhere to the hospital's uniform policy at all times. Additional Information: Personal Belongings; The hospital is not responsible for the loss or theft of personal belongings. Fire Safety: Staff must observe fire orders and attend fire safety training every two years. Mandatory Training: All mandatory training (e.g., Manual Handling, BLS, Infection Control) must be completed and recertified as necessary. Smoking Policy: Smoking is prohibited within hospital buildings. Hepatitis B Vaccination: Staff are advised to avail of the vaccination through Occupational Health. Mobile Phone: The use of personal mobile phones is prohibited in clinical care areas. Hygiene: During the course of employment staff are required to ensure that the hospitals hygiene and infection control policies are adhered to at all times. All employees have responsibility to prevent transmission of infection by adhering to and implementing optimal hand hygiene and adhering to the Hospitals Hygiene processes. Hygiene is a fundamental component of St Michaels Hospitals quality system to ensure the safety and well-being of its patients and staff and plays a role in the prevention and control of healthcare associated infection. Policies/Legislation: All hospital policies and procedures form an integral part of an employment contract and may be subject to update and revision, from time to time, in consultation with union representatives as appropriate. Employees are required to comply with all hospital policies, procedures (e.g. Dignity at work, Trust in Care, Computer Usage Policy) and the hospitals ethical codes of practice.
