The School of Mechanical Electrical and Process Engineering comprises: Centre of Craft Studies Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Dept. of Mechanical Biomedical and Manufacturing Engineering Dept. of Process Energy and Transport Engineering. It offers a comprehensive range of full-time, part-time undergraduate programmes and supports an active research community. Programmes are supported by industry-standard workshops, computer laboratories and other specialist facilities. A team of technical staff within the School manage and maintain these facilities and liaise with academic staff and students to provide a supportive learning environment; the Senior Technical Officer position will be part of this team contributing as required to activities and developments across the School. The position is based primarily in Bishopstown and the appointee will report to the Head of School of Mechanical Electrical and Process Engineering, Duties and responsibilities for the position: Supervision and administration duties This includes but not limited to within the assigned School/Department/Function area: Passing on work directions from Head of School/ Head of Department/Head of Function as agreed and being responsible for ensuring completion of work. Recording/supervising and administering of attendance in accordance with current University practices. Scheduling, co-coordinating and guiding work activities following consultation. Assist with the training needs analysis programme. Monitoring, testing and recording of condition of safety equipment to comply with Health and Safety Regulations and other Regulations specific to work domain, Developing, updating, etc. of hazard analysis documentation. Undertake such other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the University. Specific Duties of this role Provide technical support for Electrical power equipment across a range of Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic and Automation Engineering laboratories. Ensure single-phase and three-phase laboratory power equipment is maintained and operated in a safe manner. Develop and maintain LV/MV/HV electrical switchgear training equipment and test facilities. Support staff and student resource requirements in Electrical, Mechatronic and Automation laboratories across the School as required Supervise, direct and co-ordinate the work of technical officers/technicians in the provision of technical support for electrical laboratory equipment across the School of Mechanical Electrical and Process Engineering Support the management of software licensing and deployment throughout the Schools of Engineering Plan future technology deployments and upgrades. Design, develop and build suitable rigs for student laboratories and manage agreed development projects Support technology developments and configurations for relevant research activities in the School. Carry out safety audits and risk assessments in Electrical Power and Automation Systems laboratories. Liaise with the Heads of Department and Head of School in the planning, development and operation of the activities described above. Qualification Requirements for the position: Essential A relevant undergraduate degree from a recognised degree awarding authority in Electrical Engineering or cognate technical discipline. AND A relevant Masters degree (Level 9) from a recognised degree awarding authority in Electrical Engineering or cognate technical discipline. AND Not less than 5 years relevant post-qualification experience in a relevant environment and at an appropriate level. Desirable The candidate should have demonstrated capacity and recent experience in technologies including: Design, maintenance, installation and support across a range of Electrical Power Generation/Distribution Systems and Engineering Control Systems applications in a laboratory, research or industrial environment. Experience with renewable energy systems design and integration would be advantageous. Design, operation and maintenance of medium and high voltage systems, smart grid integration and power systems communication networks. Experience with IEC61850 communication protocols for intelligent electronic devices at electrical substations. Experience with specification, operation and maintenance of PLC, industrial automation and SCADA systems. Proven hands-on skills in the design, building and testing of laboratory test equipment and testing/commissioning of electrical power and automation test platforms Technical support for software deployment and support in a laboratory, research or industrial environment.
