The Electrical Engineer for AWS Data Center Power Generation and transmission Infrastructure owns the successful delivery of the newest generations of data center energy innovations, and electrical power generation infrastructure technologies from concept to at-scale global implementation.

This role provides a unique opportunity to engage with advanced infrastructure solutions for HV/MV power systems and the exceptional people that develop them.

Key job responsibilities

1. Capture requirements and turn aspirational company or customer goals into well-defined, achievable and testable specifications and solutions.
2. Feasibility, design and construction of utility scale generation plants, energy storage systems, and associated substations.
3. Development of design proposals which meet or exceed our quality requirements and fall within our budgetary requirements.
4. Collaborate and design with teams or individuals from other disciplines, cultures and countries to create a construction document set.
5. Participate in site selection reviews.
6. Work with local utilities, developers, and grid operators to understand and define the interconnection requirements.
7. Work with internal teams to understand user/customer requirements.
8. Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify the appropriate electrical equipment.
9. Work with local authorities having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI, UL, IEC, EU requirements and building codes.
10. Review and approval of equipment submittals including test and commissioning requirements.
11. Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to, and during research and development projects.
12. Work with commissioning teams to prepare scripts, and properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
13. Communicate clearly and effectively at the appropriate level of detail with people from a wide range of technical abilities and backgrounds.
14. Produce clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, functional test scripts, reports and version release notes.
15. Understand and safeguard implementation of the Global Electrical and Mechanical Basis of Design (BoD) with constant auditing.
16. Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, as well as provide engineering evaluations and electrical systems audits as needed.
17. Project management skills to oversee construction, maintenance, and upgrade projects.
18. Familiarity with control systems, SCADA, and other power plant automation technologies.
19. Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
20. Having fun and offering creative, out of the box solutions.

About the team

Datacenter Engineering (DCE) Power Generation Solutions (PGS) is an engineering and technical strategy team that works to deliver energy innovations enabling reliable, available, and sustainable capacity to our growing business.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 5+ years of experience with design and operation of utility scale power plants in a utility, or project development company.
2. Understanding of the US ANSI, UL, NERC, FERC, NESC and European EN & IEC standards.
3. Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA, Carbon Neutrality and Global Net-Zero Carbon Objectives.
4. Knowledge of Greenhouse Gas and Global Air Quality Emissions Reduction techniques including NOx, SOx, PM, CH4, CO2, and SF6 as it applies to electrical power generation.
5. Technical expertise in relay protection schemes, HV & MV circuit breakers, power and distribution transformers, electrical switchgear, grounding and earthing schemes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master’s degree or higher in electrical engineering with 7+ years of relevant design experience deploying utility scale power plants across the United States.
2. Direct experience with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of generation plants, nuclear plants, energy storage assets, and substations.
3. Understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
4. Experience with fast track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade projects.
5. Experience with Hyperscale Distributed Energy Projects such as Battery Energy Storage (BESS), Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES), Fuel Cells, Solar, and Wind.
6. Experience with designing, deploying, operating utility scale power plants and interconnections.
7. Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.
